The Book of Leinster is a medieval Irish manuscript anthology preserving an extraordinary cross-section of Ireland's learned and literary tradition; the six-volume DIAS edition is its major scholarly, diplomatic transcription into print. The Book of Leinster (Irish Lebar na Núachongbála) is a large medieval Irish manuscript now preserved as Trinity College Dublin MS 1339 (H 2.18). It was probably compiled in the 12th century, principally in the monastery of Oughaval (Nuachongbáil) in County Laois, which explains the older title Lebar na Nuachongbála, "Book of Nuachongbáil." It is not really a "book" in the modern sense, nor does it contain a single work. Rather, it is a remarkable anthology or compendium of Irish learning, bringing together material that had been transmitted separately. The DIAS edition is not a modern translation and it is not primarily an edition in which the editors rewrite the Irish into a normalized or easily readable form. It is a diplomatic edition — essentially an attempt to reproduce the manuscript's text as faithfully as possible in print.
