What was striking about it - you could look at it in the V&A library - was that Murray, who really knew nothing about art, had met a Scottish artist called Ferguson who was sending over from Paris artwork by "young" artists like Picasso, Miro, etc. They looked quite startling in this 1910 magazine. And the idea, that Murray never developed, of trying to produce a magazine that had literary and visual material really working together, came to me out of that. But the other initiatives were more simple. There weren't many magazines about then because the possibility of what everybody can do now -- produce a magazine from a 'desktop' in quite small numbers and for not very much money -- didn't exist. But electronic things were just starting to happen, and the first number of Ambit we partly set ourselves on a machine called a variotyper. It enabled us to paste down visual work of which we had some good drawings from an Australian artist, Oliffe Richmond, in this first number and enabled us to begin the notion of producing an arts magazine rather than the traditional poetry or Eng. Lit. magazine. I'd say there's still no magazine in the country that combines high class artwork, produced and found by Mike Foreman over the years, alongside writers who I think are exciting.' Some contributions were specially written for this issue of Penguin New Writing, and are the first publication in the UK, including William Sansom and Stephen Spender. With colour and phot…ogravure illustrations - Issues 27-30 have colour illustrations including work by Robert Medley, Michael Ayrton, Laurence Gowing in this issue. ***A very good copy in pale-green colour-illustrated thin card covers. The covers are clean, with just light rubbing and creasing commensurate with age and handling - there is a scuff to the front cover where a sticker has been removed, and some light smudges / finger marks on the back cover (please see scans). The top outer corner of the page block has been slightly bumped, with slight creasing to the page corner tips. Bottom edge of spine slightly rubbed and scuffed, and the spine edges have some rubbing and surface loss, but with no loss to the fragile spine covering. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions and no internal foxing. Inside covers slightly browned. No creases or tears - other than the aforementioned slight creasing to the top corner tips. During the Second World War, in 1940, with New Writing's future uncertain, John Lehmann wrote New Writing in Europe which was published by Penguin Books, a critical summary of the writers of the 1930s. ***Allen Lane of Penguin Books managed to secure paper for a new series which became Penguin New Writing, a monthly book-magazine, this time produced as a paperback. Penguin New Writing ran to 40 issues in total, surviving until 1950. ***First impression of the true first edition of John Lehmann's Penguin New Writing Issue 27, published in April 1946. (Wiki) ***'AMBIT started in '59; there were various impulses behind it. I'd been interested in the writer John Middleton Murray, who was married to Katharine Mansfield. He had run a magazine from about 1910 onwards for two or three years called Rhythm that attracted writers like D.H. Lawrence, and Katharine Mansfield of course. What was striking about it - you could look at it in the V&A library - was that Murray, who really knew nothing about art, had met a Scottish artist called Ferguson who was sending over from Paris artwork by "young" artists like Picasso, Miro, etc. They looked quite startling in this 1910 magazine. And the idea, that Murray never developed, of trying to produce a magazine that had literary and visual material really working together, came to me out of that. But the other initiatives were more simple. There weren't many magazines about then because the possibility of what everybody can do now -- produce a magazine from a 'desktop' in quite small numbers and for not very much money -- didn't exist. But electronic things were just starting to happen, and the first number of Ambit we partly set ourselves on a machine called a variotyper. It enabled us to paste down visual work of which we had some good drawings from an Australian artist, Oliffe Richmond, in this first number and enabled us to begin the notion of producing an arts magazine rather than the traditional poetry or Eng. Lit. magazine. I'd say there's still no magazine in the country that combines high class artwork, produced and found by Mike Foreman over the years, alongside writers who I think are exciting.' First impression of the true first edition, and the only issue of the magazine issued in hardcover, actually published in February 19…45, although the book states 'Published in December 1944' - publication was delayed due to operating under wartime conditions. With an eight page introductory piece by the editor Tambimuttu, and dedicated to the memory of the poet Keith Douglas, who was killed in action during the invasion of Normandy in the summer of 1944. The book contains three stunning full-page colour lithographs by Gerald Wilde, one of which is a double-page centre-fold, to accompany T. S. Eliot's "Rhapsody on a Windy Night". In addition, there are eight-pages of drawings by Mervyn Peake which were used to illustrate "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", which was published the year before by Chatto & Windus (including the plates suppressed and not used by Chatto). There is also a full-page handwritten poem by Augustus John. ***Very good in light beige cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine (There is also a variant issue of the book in blue cloth). The gilt is still nice and bright. The boards are clean - just slightly marked with age and handling. Edges of boards very slightly rubbed. Corners slightly creased. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Internally near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean, with just some very light foxing to the front endpaper and pastedown. Illustrations bright and clean. The lithographs are printed on high grade cartridge paper, printed from the original stones by the Baynard Press, whereas the text of the magazine is on thin wartime economy paper. No creases or tears. No dustwrapper. ***258mm x 192mm. x prelim-pages plus 264 pages. ***Contents: Poems, Illustrations, Prose, Art, Radio, Music, Points of View, Correspondence.
