Original Wraps. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. Ceri Richards, Edward Burra, Keith Vaughan, Graham Sutherland et al (illustrator). First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. Some contributions were specially written for this issue of Penguin New Writing, and are the first publication in the UK, including Graham Greene's piece on re-visiting an unfinished novel in 'Across the Border'. With colour and photogravure illustrations, including work by Ceri Richards, Edward Burra, Keith Vaughan, Graham Sutherland et al. ***A good only reading copy in colour-illustrated thin card covers. The covers show some rubbing and creasing commensurate with age and handling, with a couple of deep creases to the front cover. Spine edges rubbed with some surface loss. No actual loss to the fragile spine covering. Paper stock lightly tanned as usual, with heavier tanning to the page block edges. Internally there is quite a lot of page creasing, and the paper has got wet at some stage, and some of the pages are wrinkled as a result (please see scans). No previous ownership inscriptions and no internal foxing. No tears. ***180mm x120mm. 192 pages. ***Contents: J. Maclaren-Ross: Monsieur Felix; Louis MacNeice: Street-Scene; Tom Hopkinson: Above the Snow-line; Donagh MacDonagh: Three Poems from the Irish; Graham Greene: Across the Border; Henry Reed: Antigone; A.C. Wann: Growing up in Chad Street; Norman Nicholson: Two Poems; Boris Pasternak: The Thrushes; Giles Romilly: Two Poems; John R. Townsend: Poem After Victory; R.C.M. Howard: The Voyage Back; Gillian Hughes: Calm Sea. ***The Critical View: Film Critic: Parade of Violence; V. S. Pritchett: Men of the World; John Lehmann: The Search for the Myth; From a Painter's Note-Book VI. ***The Living Moment: Stuart Hood: The Valley; Rollo Woolley: The Search; Sacha Carnegie: Snow. ***New Writing was a popular literary periodical in book format founded in 1936 by John Lehmann and committed to anti-fascism. During the Second World War, in 1940, with New Writing's future uncertain, John Lehmann wrote New Writing in Europe which was published by Penguin Books, a critical summary of the writers of the 1930s. ***Allen Lane of Penguin Books managed to secure paper for a new series which became Penguin New Writing, a monthly book-magazine, this time produced as a paperback. Penguin New Writing ran to 40 issues in total, surviving until 1950. ***First impression of the true first edition of John Lehmann's Penguin New Writing Issue 30, published in 1947. Of interest to collectors of collectable Penguin paperbacks. ***Please note the above-mentioned faults - a reading copy only. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. Ceri Richards, Edward Burra, Keith Vaughan, Graham Sutherland et al (illustrator). First Edition. A rarely found complete run of the famous literary periodical PENGUIN NEW WRITING, edited by John Lehmann. Many contributions were specially written for the series, and are the first publication in the UK. Vol. 13 onwards are illustrated, both in photogravure and colour, and 27-30 also have colour illustrations - artists include Ceri Richards, Edward Burra, Keith Vaughan, Graham Sutherland et al. ***All the volumes are complete in their original thin card covers. The covers are generally clean, with inevitable rubbing and creasing commensurate with age and handling. The wartime issues in particular are very fragile, but there is no significant damage, although a couple of the early numbers have front cover detached but present, and a few numbers have some bumping and creasing to the page block. Some of the numbers have previous ownership inscriptions, but most do not. Paper stock tanned as usual in the earlier numbers due to the wartime paper stock used - lighter tanning in the later issues with better paper stock. Details of the set below: Vols. 1-5 (1940-41) vg-nf with no inscriptions / Vols. 6-10 (1941) vg, 6 has writing on cover, 8 has slightly damaged cover and name inside, 9 has slightly damaged cover and some top corners creased / Vols. 11-15 (1941-42) vg-nf, 11 has slightly damaged cover / Vols. 16-22 (1943-44) vg-nf except 16 & 17 have front cover detached. Vols. 23-26 (1945) all nf. ***Larger format with illustrated covers (apart from 39 & 40): Vols. 27-30 (1946-47) nf / Vols. 31-35 (1947-48) vg-nf, 31 & 32 bumped at top corner of page block / Vols. 36-40 (1949-50) vg-nf, 36 has owner's stamp, 37 spine slightly torn. ***Early numbers 180mm x 112mm / later numbers 180mm x120mm. Issues vary between 128 - 192 pages. New Writing was a popular literary periodical in book format founded in 1936 by John Lehmann and committed to anti-fascism. During the Second World War, in 1940, with New Writing's future uncertain, John Lehmann wrote New Writing in Europe which was published by Penguin Books, a critical summary of the writers of the 1930s. Allen Lane of Penguin Books managed to secure paper for a new series which became Penguin New Writing, a monthly book-magazine, this time produced as a paperback. Penguin New Writing ran to 40 issues in total, surviving until 1950. ***A very uncommon and rarely found complete run of the famous literary periodical PENGUIN NEW WRITING, edited by John Lehmann - of interest to collectors of period Penguin paperbacks. It is most unusual now to find a complete run of the 40 volumes. The run has a multiplicity of authors and artists from the period. The wartime issues have adverts on the back and inside covers which are particularly evocative of the era (see scans). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Original Wraps. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Jacket, as Issued. Graham Sutherland (Three centrefold lithographs and colour cover illustration) (illustrator). First Edition. Vol. 2, No. 9 - May 1943 - the ninth issue in the original series of the historic Poetry magazine, designed and edited by Tambimuttu -illustrated with three lithographs (one centre-fold double-page and two other lithographs to the central pages), plus a colour cover, all by Graham Sutherland. ***Near fine in the original thin illustrated stapled paper covers. The covers are exceptionally clean and unmarked. Staples rusted as usual. No tears. Orange colour to front cover bright. Edges of covers hardly rubbed or creased at all. The white back cover is surprisingly clean, with just some light marks caused by handling over the years (please see scans). Internally the pages are beautifully clean and unmarked, without any of the usual foxing. Virtually no creasing and no tears. The lithographs are printed on high grade cartridge paper, printed from the original stones by the Baynard Press, whereas the text of the magazine is on thin wartime economy paper. ***64 pages plus adverts and Notes on Contributors on the inside covers. ***248mm x 185mm. ***Contents: Anonymous: First Ode; Second ode (For the Sun); Fourth Ode; Sixth Ode (To Woman); Seventh Ode; Eight Ode; Tenth Ode; Eleventh Ode; Celia Buckmaster: Poem, Three Queens for Arthur When He Died; Maurice Carpenter: The Roots of Songs, Three Lyrics: 1. No. 9 - the ninth issue of the original first series of this renowned poetry magazine, edited by Tambimuttu, published during the Second World War. Of interest to collectors of poetry first editions, and the publications of Poetry London. ***The wartime issues of Poetry (London) magazine are now quite scarce, and copies in such nice collectable condition are seldom seen. Issue 9 was the first of the series to include specially commissioned lithographs, and continued the expanded format of 64 pages, which was quite a challenge considering it was published under wartime restrictions. ***A scarce Poetry London first edition title, very hard to find intact with the original colour lithographs, which are often removed for framing. A very desirable issue and exceptionally rare in this near fine condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
