About The Author : Romesh Chunder Dutt CIE ( 1848 1909) was an Indian civil servant, economic historian, writer and translator of Ramayana and Mahabharata. He was educated in various Bengali District schools, then at Hare School, Calcutta. After his father's untimely death in a boat accident in eastern Bengal, his uncle, Shoshee Chunder Dutt, an accomplished writer, became his guardian in 1861. He wrote about his uncle, "He used to sit at night with us and our favorite study used to be pieces from the works of the English poets. " He was a relative of Toru Dutt, one of nineteenth century Bengal's most prominent poets. At that time, only one other Indian, Satyendra Nath Tagore, had qualified for the Indian Civil Service. About The Author : Sir William Wilson Hunter KCSI CIE (1840 -1900) was a Scottish historian, statistician, a compiler and a member of the Indian Civil Service. About The Author : Sir Henry Miers Elliot KCB ( 1808 1853) was an English civil servant and historian who worked with the East India Company in India for 26 years. He is most known for The History of India, as Told by Its Own Historians based on his works, published posthumously in eight volumes, between 18671877 in London. However, Elliot died before completing the second volume. A second edition was published in 1869 after being significantly enlarged and revised by John Beames. The edition was titled Memoirs on the History, Folk-lore, and Distribution of the Races of the North Western Provinces of India: Being an Amplified Edition of the Original Supplemental Glossary of Indian Terms. Elliot's life-work, the Mohammedan historians of India, came out mostly in two well-known works. About the Author :-Vincent Arthur Smith, CIE, (18431920) was an Irish Indologist and art historian. He was born in Dublin on 3rd June 1843 which was then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. His father was Dr Aquilla Smith, well known in medical and numismatic circles in Dublin and London. He passed the Indian Civil Services exam in 1871 and was appointed to what would become the United Provinces in India. He would go to serve between 18711900 in a variety of magisterial and executive positions including terms as district and sessions judge eventually retiring as commissioner in July 1900. By 1910 Smith was settled in Oxford where he joined St. John's College and was appointed a Curator of the Indian Institute . Lyall joined the Indian Civil Service in 1856, and served a long career in India. He landed at Calcutta in January 1856. After four months of training he was posted as an Assistant Magistrate at Bulandshahr in Doab, a part of the North-West Provinces. He was there when the Indian Rebellion of 1857 occurred: his house was burned down and he was nearly killed when fleeing as his horse was shot from under him. He joined the Khaki Risala of Volunteers, an irregular European cavalry unit. He helped "pacify" Bulandshahr. In May 1858 he was transferred to Shahjehanpur where he helped "restore order". About The Author : Romesh Chunder Dutt CIE ( 1848 1909) was an Indian civil servant, economic historian, writer and translator of Ramayana and Mahabharata. About The Author : Sir Henry Miers Elliot KCB ( 1808 1853) was an English civil servant and historian who worked with the East India Company in India for 26 years. He was born in Dublin on 3rd June 1843 which was then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He passed the Indian Civil Services exam in 1871 and was appointed to what would become the United Provinces in India. He would go to serve between 18711900 in a variety of magisterial and executive positions including terms as district and sessions judge eventually retiring as commissioner in July 1900. By 1910 Smith was settled in Oxford where he joined St. John's College and was appointed a Curator of the Indian Institute . About The Author : Sir William Wilson Hunter KCSI CIE (1840 -1900) was a Scottish historian, statistician, a compiler and a member of the Indian Civil Service.He is most known for The Imperial Gazetteer of India on which he started working in 1869, and which was eventually published in nine volumes in 1881, then fourteen, and later as a twenty-six volume set after his death. He reached Bengal Presidency in November 1862 and was appointed assistant magistrate and collector of Birbhum, in the lower provinces of Bengal, where he began collecting local traditions and records, which formed the materials for his publication, entitled The Annals of Rural Bengal, which influenced among others the historical romance Durgeshnandini of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.He also compiled A Comparative Dictionary of the Non-Aryan Languages of India, a glossary of dialects based mainly upon the collections of Brian Houghton Hodgson, which according to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, "testifies to the industry of the writer but contains much immature philological speculation".
