Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. In modern times terrorism has emerged as a scourge and South Asia is the region where terrorist groups of almost all varieties have operated. However countering the challenge from terrorism came on the international agenda only after the attacks of 9/11. This book is an attempt to study the problem of terrorism in South Asia which has often been perceived at its hub. The contributors to the volume belonging to South Asian region have provided valuable insights on the issue of terrorism and have also suggested measures to deal with the problem. They consider terrorism as a phenomenon that has been harmful to society, economy and polity of the South Asian nations. At the same time they also point out that there should not be overemphasis on the use of force. In fact, a calibrated use of force is likely to be more effective. Ultimately if terrorism is to be comprehensively defeated then ideologies and root causes that propel it further need to be tackled properly.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. The book is a systematic study of poverty in India. It brings together contributions of several social scientists with the objective of promoting clearer understanding of poverty-related questions through inter-disciplinary dialogues. The book deals with issues of poverty and society in India and discusses the challenges of studying the multidimensional aspects of poverty. Each section of the book contains a specific thematic area in the study of poverty, looking at the theoretical, methodological and empirical aspects of the dynamics of poverty in India. Some of the papers in this book have tried to evaluate poverty eradication policies and programmes since independence. It has also papers on the people's responses to their situations of poverty. Most of the papers in the book have used microdata for critical analysis of programmes and policies in different regions of India. A large proportion of India's poor are living in chronic poverty. This has resulted in protests, electoral defeats for ruling political parties and coalitions and the rise of extremism. If we analyse the protests/movements after the 1990s closely, we can see that these displayed some emerging characteristics. Firstly, these movements were against post-liberalisation industrialisations, which were based on privatisation of public resources and mostly profit-oriented. These were also based on capital-intensive technologies and maximum utilisation of the natural resources. The post-liberalisation industrialisation policy ignored the land, forest and water issues, which were basic sources of livelihood for rural populations of the country. The movements also tried to link the issues of development with cultural questions. Thirdly, these movements also tried to provide an alternative discourse of people-friendly development and they also provided a space for the marginalised masses. These protests and movements also questioned the political economy approach of development and gave an alternative to link development with the socio-cultural aspects of the specific region. Finally, all these protests/movements are against industrial developments which are creating marginalised groups in peripheral areas.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Dermatoglyphic features are unaffected by environment and no development changes observed except for increased in size and growth of the ridges with the growth of hands. Individual finger and palm print vary from individual to individual with no exception of even identical twins. Dermatoglyphics offer a reliable means of criminal identification, disputed paternity, association with diseases, population variability, inheritance, sexual dimorphism and twin diagnosis. This commemorative volume is edited by Dr. Dipak Kumar Adak and Dr. Anand Murti Mishra to pay homage to their teacher, Dr. Ramesh Chaube (30.07. 1943-28.11.2014), Retired Professor, Department of Anthropology, Dr. H.S. Gour University, Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. Late Prof. Chaube devoted his life in advancement of research in the field of dermatoglyphics. Among some noteworthy contributions, he developed a research methodology for the classification of palmar creases in the year 1971, which was accepted internationally and till date it has been in use all over the world. This volume consists of twenty-five chapters contributed by distinguished scientists in the fields of medical science, population biology and anthropology. It has three sections. First section focused on methodological perspectives of dermatoglyphics, which consists of six articles. Contributed research papers are on asymmetry and diversity in dermatoglyphics traits, inbreeding effects on finger ridge counts, micro-evolutionary trend and classificatory variation in dermatoglyphics, formulation of bracelet creases and incidence of monomorphic finger patterns. The second section consists of five articles on clinical aspects of dermatoglyphics. The authors have reported finger ridge count and atd angle in E-B-thalassaemia patients, palmar ridge counts in autistic patients, simian crease and Sydney line in diabetic mellitus patients, dermatoglyphic main line in Turner's syndrome and palmar flexion creases in mouth cancer patients.
