In den WarenkorbHardcover. x, 369 p.; 49 halftone illus. in text; 22 cm. From `The Lincoln Family and the New York Avenue Church' p. 234-53: `Shortly after the Inauguration, Mrs. Lincoln sent for the plan of the church which showed the seating arrangements. The story of her hoice is told in the chapter on The Lincoln Pew [p. 254-57]. The first Sunday after their occupancy of the White House, the members of the family were in their pew. During the first year, both Willie and Tad frequently went to the Fourth Presbyterian Church with their friends, the Taft boys. Many stories of their exploits remain as memories to lighten the dark days of the war. One Sunday at dinner Mr. Lincoln was taking Willie and Tad to task for cutting the church service. They replied they had attended divine service at the Fourth Presbyterian Church adding that it was more fun to go to church there. Their father said, "But I didn't know that you went to church for fun." The boys replied, "Oh yes, papa! You just ought to see those old rebels slam their pew doors and stamp out when the minister prayers for the President of the United States."' (p. 235 f.) -- `Lincoln's part in a wartime romance: a hitherto unpublished story of a young soldier who obeyed his summons' on William Anthony Elderkin and Fannie Gurley, daughter of Pastor Phineas Gurley, p. 236-39 -- Account of Phineas Gurley's funeral sermon for Willie Lincoln in 1862 (p. 241) -- Text of Phineas Gurley's sermon "Have faith in God" delivered in the East Room of the Executive Mansion, Wednesday, April 19th, 1865, at the funeral of Abraham Lincoln (p. 246-52), and his hymn for Lincoln's interment at Springfield, Ill.
