In den Warenkorb8vo. (23 x 15 cm). pp. lxxxi + 502. Bound by Mudie in half brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands and tooled decoration, lettering in gilt; all edges red sprinkled; green endpapers. Portrait vignette of Chaucer and an illustration of his tomb at Westminster Abbey towards the front of the book. Vertical crack to front board, small dent to bottom edge of back board, edges lightly rubbed. Generally a good copy. Thomas Tyrwhitt's edition of Chaucer's poetry was initially published in five volumes in 1775 and again with a glossary in 1778. Tyrwhitt's treatment of Chaucer was revolutionary and his well-researched glossary opened Chaucer's obscure and archaic language to a much wider readership. His edition is considered by many to be foundational in modern Chaucer editorship.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. engr f/ps, with tissue guards, in v I & II, engr arms on titles, without half-title to v V, 2 pp adverts tipped in to v I. Foxing to f/ps & guards, little spotting elsewhere; uncut in original (?) cloth-backed red paper-covered boards, paper spine labels (chipped), worn and scuffed, spines faded and frayed, v II sp missing, v V defective & repaired; large armorial bookpls of [Sir] Leonard Twiston Davies (1894-1953, Mommouthshire landowner & patron of the National Library and National Museum of Wales). First Pickering printing, reprinting Tyrwhitt's groundbreaking edition of 1775-8, the first serious attempt to restore the genuine text. This is also Pickering's first major work as publisher - 'his first entirely characteristic production', according to Geoffrey Keynes (William Pickering, Publisher (p 15). The Canterbury Tales were apparently issued in Pickering's characteristic smooth cloth (red in this case), so the binding on this set, which certainly seems to be original, is surpising and must be uncommon. …

In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. Large-paper copy. Tall octavo (25cm). In the publisher's binding of half-parchment over marbled boards; xxii,[2],231pp; fore and bottom edges uncut. The parchment spine is wanting its title label, otherwise the fragile publisher's binding is very nicely preserved, with expected rubbing and wear to extremities but with the boards solidly attached; the text fresh, clean, and unmarked, completely untrimmed preserving full margins; a Very Good copy. Musgrave (1732-1780) was both a physician and classicist, and achieved a measure of eminence in both fields, with the ODNB noting that ".as a Greek scholar, [Musgrave] had few superiors." Musgrave died in severely reduced circumstances, leaving a widow for whose benefit the current volume was published by subscription, the whole endeavor carried out by Musgrave's old friend Thomas Tyrwhitt. The list of subscribers is indeed impressive, including among others Samuel Johnson, Edward Gibbon, Joshua Reynolds, and others.
