A highly significant historical extract containing the complete January 1849 issue (No. 13) of The Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Second Series, Vol. III, pp. 1-79), featuring the monumental first appearance in print relating to the Amazonian expedition of Alfred Russel Wallace and Henry Walter Bates. 8vo, pp78 plus table of 'Meteorological Observations made by Mr Thompson" to rear. Cleanly extracted from the original volume. The text block is currently disbound and neatly housed and protected within a modern blue card wrappers. The front cover features a neat printed paper title label reading: "Wallace & Bates, journey to the province of Para, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. Vol iii 1849 pp74-75." The Wallace & Bates notice (pp. 74-75), titled "Journey to explore the Province of Pará," serves as the official announcement to the British scientific establishment of their arrival in South America. Communicated via their London agent, Samuel Stevens, it quotes directly from Wallace's earliest letters home, detailing their initial impressions of the Amazon, their collection base at Pará, and the packing of their first commercial shipments of insects, lepidoptera, and bird skins. A primary document of exceptional scarcity and foundational importance in the history of evolutionary biology, marking the literal starting point of Wallace's career as a tropical naturalist (S003 in the Wallace bibliography). The complete 79-page issue also contains several other important mid-century papers, including G. H. K. Thwaites' Further Observations on the Diatomaceae (pp.10-12). The loose internal text block leaves are in very good condition being clean, crisp, and free from heavy foxing or waterstains, showing only some light, natural age-toning. The modern blue card covers are in very good condition with just a few small, minor surface marks. A highly desirable copy of a legendary Wallace rarity.…
