Der Literaturhistoriker und Gellert-Schüler Johann Georg Eck war in Leipzig Professor für praktische Philosophie (Moral und Politik) und ab 1791 Professor der Poesie. "Seine schriftstellerischen Arbeiten sind zumeist durch seine amtlichen Stellungen veranlasst, denn als Professor der Poesie hatte er die sog. Magister-Panegyrici zu schreiben; ebenso musste er als Dekan oder Procancellarius zahlreiche Programme verfassen, die ihn zu größeren selbständigen Arbeiten nicht kommen ließen" (ADB 5, 603). Offenbar hat Eck sehr häufig diese Ämter bekleidet, denn der vorliegende Band enthält Programme von ihm aus den Jahren 1790, 1794 (2), 1796, 1798, 1800 und 1802 - 1805.
