It has waited a long time for publication in a… modern edition: the work survived not in its Greek original, but in Syriac translation, the theme is technical and complicated and its author belongs to a period and to a communion unfamiliar to most students of Christian life and thought in the patristic era. Ce volume nous entraine dans les controverses qui agiterent les premiers siecles de l'Eglise monophysite, c'est a dire de cette partie de l'Eglise qui a toujours refuse d'accepter le Concile de Chalcedoine (451) et tout discours parlant de deux natures dans le Christ. Dans la seconde moitie du VIieme siecle, le groupe qui s'etait ainsi separe de la Grand Eglise, se scinda a son tour pour une trentaine d'annees lorsque la communion fut denoncee entre Damien, patriarche monophysite d'Alexandrie (557-607), et Pierre, qui portait le titre de patriarche (monophysite) d'Antioche (581-591) et vivait en fait dans un monastere des montagnes de Syrie. Pierre accusait Damien de ne pas distinguer suffisamment les trois Personnes de la Trinite et de retomber ainsi dans le vieux monarchianisme de Sabellius et des Juifs. Il ecrivit donc un long traite de refutation, divise en trois livres: on a garde le livre III en entier - il sera edite bientot - et une tres grosse partie du livre II, ici publiee pour la premiere fois. Si l'ecrit fut redige en grec - d'ou sa parution dans cette serie -, il ne s'est conserve qu'en traduction syriaque, et c'est donc un texte syriaque qui forme la substance de la presente publication. Mais cette langue etant peu connue chez nous, les editeurs ont muni le texte d'une traduction anglaise en vis-a-vis, et meme d'un resume qui permet, en peu de temps, de prendre connaissance de l'ensemble des developpements qu'on trouve dans le traite. Datant de 588 ou 589, le livre est un des plus anciens temoins d'une methode dialectique qui, moyennant quelque evolution, allait avoir beaucoup de succes dans les Eglises: la dispute scholastique. La partie du texte editee cette fois est, peut-on dire, totalement claire: il n'ya guere de lacunes dans le texte, les trois manuscrits conserves et la tradition indirecte parvenant a combler presque tous les trous que presente chacun des temoins pris separement. La traduction et meme le resume en anglais permettent de bien suivre le developpement de Pierre, lequel refute pour ainsi dire pas a pas un texte de Damien, patriarche monophysite d'Alexandrie, et de se rendre compte combien les problemes de logique et plus encore la question du rapport entre les mots et les realites etaient sous-jacents aux polemiques de cette epoque. Il s'agit ici du troisieme tome (apres CCSG 29 et 32) des quatre prevus, qui doivent nous restituer tout ce qu'on a garde - en version syriaque seulement - de l'oeuvre monumentale de Pierre de Callinique, son Traite contre Damien, patriarche d'Alexandrie. Il va sans dire que le texte syriaque est accompagne d'une version anglaise vis-a-vis. L'ecrit, primitivement redige en grec, date de 590-592. Pierre s'en prend a Damien, qui ne distinguait pas suffisamment les trois personnes de la Trinite, et, pour le refuter, il utilise abondamment les ecrits ecclesiastiques anterieurs. Il cite d'abord, litteralement et in extenso, les lettres et oeuvres de Damien auxquelles il s'attaque; comme celles-ci sont perdues, c'est notre meilleur acces a la pensee du patriarche d'Alexandrie. A cote de citations connues par ailleurs et transmises sous les noms d'Athanase, Basile, Cyrille d'Alexandrie, Gregoire de Nazianze, Gregoire de Nysse et Severe d'Antioche, ce troisieme tome a conserve egalement des fragments, inconnus jusqu'ici, de Cyrille d'Alexandrie (du livre VIII du Commentaire sur Jean), de Gregoire de Nysse (une bonne dizaine de lignes du premier livre Contre Eunome) et de Pierre IV d'Alexandrie. On y lit egalement 7 passages nouveaux de Severe d'Antioche et quelques extraits d'oeuvres anterieures - perdues - de Pierre de Callinique lui-meme, passages que celui-ci reprend dans son argumentation. Pour le reste, le troisieme tome ne differe guere des deux premiers. La methode de refutation est toujours la meme: le texte de Damien une fois cite, Pierre lui en oppose d'autres, venant d'autorites incontestees, puis il analyse longuement ces derniers pour montrer qu'ils sont incompatibles avec la pensee du patriarche d'Alexandrie. Avec ce quatrieme tome s'acheve l'edition - monumentale: elle comprend 1900 pages de texte - du Traite de Pierre de Callinique, patriarche monophysite d'Antioche (581-591) contre Damien, son collegue d'Alexandrie (578-607). Ce traite, si long qu'il soit encore, est incompletement conserve: le livre I et une partie du livre II ne sont plus disponibles. Le sujet de la querelle etait trinitaire: comment concilier une seule nature divine et trois personnes reellement distinctes? Entre les deux patriarches monophysites, les imprecisions et les malentendus se sont ajoutes a la difficulte intrinseque de la question pour aboutir finalement a un schisme qui dura une vingtaine d'annees. Neanmoins, Pierre de Callinique, parce qu'il cite abondamment Damien, nous a conserve une bonne partie de nombreuses oeuvres perdues en tradition directe. Dans son Traite, comme il recourt continuellement a l'autorite de ses devanciers, il a aussi transmis de nombreux fragments (de Gregoire de Nysse, de Cyrille d'Alexandrie, de Severe d'Antioche et d'autres) que nous ne connaissions pas jusqu'ici. La traduction anglaise integrale, les resumes (Analysis) des differents chapitres et les index cumulatifs englobant a la fois les 4 tomes du Contra Damianum et l'Anti-Tritheist Dossier, que les memes erudits ont publie en 1981 et qui pourrait avoir constitue le livre I du present Traite, permettront de consulter et d'utiliser sans trop de difficulte cet ensemble de textes gigantesque.
