The 6 by 9 inch hardcover catalog is 173 pages and in good condition. The dust jacket is folded and tucked inside with some creases and wear. The orange cloth boards have sharp corners and a bright color and the inside text pages are clean and without markings. However, it is from the Smithsonian library with call number tag to the spine and barcode to the back cover with associated stamping on the title page, dated 1976. This is Daniel Boorstin's copy, with bookplate present inside. Daniel J. Boorstin was the twelfth librarian of congress from 1975 until 1987, appointed under President Ford. He was also an accomplished author of more than 20 books, contributing much to the fields of sociology and history. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1973, for his book, "The Americans: The Democratic Experience.".…

East (1909-2001) was a specialist in colonial and revolutionary history. He taught at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. East earned his BA at Williams College in 1931 and his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1938. He received the Dunning Prize of the AHA in 1938 for his book Business Enterprise in the American Revolutionary Era. Other works of his include John Quincy Adams, the Critical Years, 1785-1794 (1962) and Connecticut Loyalists (1974). He was the founder of the Program for Loyalist Studies and Publications, an international organization sponsored by the American Antiquarian Society, the City University of New York, the University of London, and the University of New Brunswick. After teaching at Columbia University from 1934 to 1936 and Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia in 1937, he joined the specialist staff of the newly founded National Archives (1937-1940) before starting his decades-long career (instructor to professor of history) at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He retired in 1977, but continued to supervise the work of the Loyalist program until his death. John Quincy Adams ( July 11, 1767 - February 23, 1848) was an American statesman, politician, diplomat, lawyer, and diarist who served as the sixth president of the United States, from 1825 to 1829. He previously served as the eighth United States secretary of state from 1817 to 1825. During his long diplomatic and political career, Adams served as an ambassador and also as a member of the United States Congress representing Massachusetts in both chambers. He was the eldest son of John Adams, who served as the second president of the United States from 1797 to 1801, and First Lady Abigail Adams. Initially a Federalist like his father, he won election to the presidency as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, and later, in the mid-1830s, became affiliated with the Whig Party. Adams spent much of his youth in Europe, where his father served as a diplomat. After returning to the United States, Adams established a successful legal practice in Boston. In 1794, President George Washington appointed Adams as the U.S. ambassador to the Netherlands, and Adams would serve in high-ranking diplomatic posts until 1801, when Thomas Jefferson took office as president. Federalist leaders in Massachusetts arranged for Adams's election to the United States Senate in 1802, but Adams broke with the Federalist Party over foreign policy and was denied re-election. In 1809, President James Madison, a member of the Democratic-Republican Party, appointed Adams as the U.S. ambassador to Russia. Multilingual, Adams held diplomatic posts for the duration of Madison's presidency, and he served as part of the American delegation that negotiated an end to the War of 1812. In 1817, President James Monroe selected Adams as his secretary of state. In that role, Adams negotiated the Adams-Onís Treaty, which provided for the American acquisition of Florida. He also helped formulate the Monroe Doctrine, which became a key tenet of U.S. foreign policy. In 1818, Adams was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia Andrew.Jackson soundly defeated Adams in the 1828 presidential election, making Adams the second president to fail to win re-election (his father being the first).
