Very rare account of the various earthquakes that occurred in the world, and in particular in Lisbon in the years 1356 and 1531, followed by the translation of a letter sent from Peru by a Spaniard to his friend in Sevilla describing seismic phenomena and earthquakes that had taken place in Africa in 1751. The letter is here given in Portuguese translation. This curious publication on earthquakes was published less than four years before the Great Lisbon earthquake of 1755, which, together with the ensuing tsunami, destroyed the city and claimed some 50,000 lives. - Slightly browned and soiled in the margins, especially on the title-page. First edition and only edition of this history of Lima's seismic activity since the colonial era, and its effect upon the development of Peru's coastal capital, in order to establish patterns and better predict future events. Manuel de Odriozola (1804-1889) was a Peruvian Colonel of cavalry and leading figure of the Independance of Peru, the director of the National Library of Peru from 1875-81, and a scholar most known for his Peruvian bibliographies. This work was his first publication. An uncommon work: Library Hub only locates two copies in the UK (Oxford, BL), WorldCat adds single copies in Peru and Europe, and ten in North America.
