This beautifully illustrated study of the Thames Valley gives a historical and topographical contexts to Cricklade, Staines, and its surrounding areas. Illustrations include thirty-two black-and-white photograph plates, some of which were taken by the Earl of Mayo, as well as five colour folding maps.The topographical survey is divided into two parts, the first being the general survey of existing conditions, while the second part concerns recommendations for the area. Chapter headings include 'Towns and Villages', 'Bridges', 'Landscape Character', and 'Special Areas to be Preserved'.Prepared by The Earl of Mayo, S. D. Adshead and Patrick Abercrombie, with assistance from W. Harding Thompson, a member of the Thames Valley Branch of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England.Collated, complete. He writes an extremely detailed account of what he sees & hears in cafe society & on the streed (Nerhood). VG.

Illustrated with a frontispice portrait of Mr. Thomas Conolly with tissue guard and 30 further plates. 6.5 X 9.25 inches. The book is a little faded to the spine, lower corners bumped, some spotting to the tissue guard and final pages. Overall a very good copy, with sound and solid hinges, and endpapers, All quite clean throughout, and all plates present as called for.

Scarce. Written by a British Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards who disembarked at Massawa in 1874 on a hunting trip in northern Ethiopia and left in 1875. He gives an indication of the numerous wild animals which roamed in the area but were soon to be decimated as a result of the import of firearms. There is an interesting description of Emperor Yohannes IV's military adviser, General Kirkham. The author refers briefly to Asmara, then a village, as well as to the market town of Adwa and the Bogos country to the west. 'The author's hunting party traveled through the Mareb River region of Abyssinia and encountered lion, gazelle, hartebeest, and elephant. While there are many incidences of sport, much of the narrative is of travel in the area.' (Czech). Czech p111; Pankhurst 55.
