Nicely produced planning study of this county, with excellent illustrations. The area was still predominately rural. Also useful for the City of Oxford's position in the county.

Covers the Epping Ridge, the Lea Valley and adjoining valleys and uplands. This beautifully illustrated study of the Thames Valley gives a historical and topographical contexts to Cricklade, Staines, and its surrounding areas. Illustrations include thirty-two black-and-white photograph plates, some of which were taken by the Earl of Mayo, as well as five colour folding maps.The topographical survey is divided into two parts, the first being the general survey of existing conditions, while the second part concerns recommendations for the area. Chapter headings include 'Towns and Villages', 'Bridges', 'Landscape Character', and 'Special Areas to be Preserved'.Prepared by The Earl of Mayo, S. D. Adshead and Patrick Abercrombie, with assistance from W. Harding Thompson, a member of the Thames Valley Branch of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England.Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, excellent. Cloth is bright, with a single mark to rear board. A bit of spotting to text block. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper. Dust wrapper has a bit of edge wear that has resulted in a small closed tear to top of front wrap as well as two to the head of spine. A bit of spotting to top edge, with a few marks to front and rear wraps. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, as well as plates and folding maps. Palmer was a close friend of F D R and builder of the Techwood the first housing project in America (Atlanta) Laid in is a huge foled map of the project. Bookplate is an official statement setting the rules for possession of the maps in the text etc. "No person can acquire these maps from you and you are not allowed to part with the possession of them to any person except under the authority of a Licence granted by the Secretary of State or a Chief Officer of Police" Laid in is a14 page attachment inscribed by F L ?? an Engineer and Surveyor conected with the project.
