Three newspaper articles (one in an envelope) laid down onto the preliminaries, and several letters (see below) stapled to the front pastedown. Spine heavily sunned, binding with some loss to the cloth at the corners and spine ends, endleaves a bit sunned at the edges, and a tiny bit of abrasion between the final page and rear fly, a sound, very good copy lacking the dust jacket (flaps are laid in). The text is fine. Inscribed by the author on the title page (the ink is a bit blurred): "9/25/33 To [?] RH Fenker In remembrance of my one time associate Mr. Fred Wood inscribed[?] for you Sm Vauclain." Vauclain was an inventor, and for a time president of Baldwin Locomotive Works, which produced over 70,000 locomotives between 1825 and 1951. Laid into the book is a carbon of an August 23, 1929 Typed Letter Signed from New York State Insurance Examiner Richard Haist Fenker to the author, praising the magazine articles that formed the basis of the book and describing his professional relationship with one-time Vice President of the International Nickel Company E. Frank Wood, whom Vauclain also knew. (Fenker was employed by the family "in a confidential capacity" for 12 years and held him in high esteem-no pun intended. The carbon is fair only, toned and brittle, split, with some loss, a bit to the text but not to sense.) Stapled inside the front cover (staples not penetrating to the outer cover) are two Typed Notes Signed from Vauclain to Fenker and two carbons of Fenkin's notes to Vauclain. (The top letter is tanned, and final letter also laid down onto the front pastedown, very good or better). The first TNS from the author to Fenker is dated August 36, 1929; he notes his admiration and "very pleasant relationship" with Fenker's employer E. Frank Wood, and notes that, while publication in book form doesn't appear to be a possibility at that point, "if possible I shall be glad to mention Mr. Wood's name." The additional TNS from Vauclain and two Fenker carbons are dated 1933, after the latter had had a chance to read *Steaming Up!* and discuss the possibility of receiving a Signed copy (the present volume).
