Hardcover. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: The Syllabus of a Complete Course of Lectures on Chemistry, prepared for the British East India Company's Military Seminary at Addiscombe, aimed to equip young officers with practical chemistry knowledge. The course focused on improving industries crucial to colonial India, including agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. Topics covered included basic chemistry, metallurgy, glass-making, dyes, agricultural chemistry (fertilizers, pest control), and mining processes. It also emphasized the application of chemistry in military engineering, infrastructure projects, and armaments. The syllabus was designed to support the officers' roles in advancing the British Empire's economic and technological interests in India. About The Author: Edward Solly (18191886) was an English chemist and antiquary known for his work in chemistry, particularly in agriculture and plant science. In 1838, he was appointed chemist to the Royal Asiatic Society and, in 1845, became professor of chemistry at Addiscombe College. Solly conducted experiments on the effects of electricity on plant growth and was involved in the Great Exhibition of 1851, where he served as a juror. He published a significant paper on iodine's electrical conductivity at 17 and later authored Rural Chemistry (1843). Solly also contributed to genealogical and literary studies, editing works on hereditary titles and publishing in various periodicals. Shelf wear to top edge of D/J. Browning to edge of back D/J. With a Preface by Father Trevor Huddleston. It was in November 1927 that Solly Sachs threw up his studies for the bar, the the University of Witwatersrand, to become general secretary of the Garment Workers' Union. The conditions then prevailing in the industry were quite appalling and Sachs found that the workers, most of them Africaner women, were being ruthlessly exploited. This book tells of the fight to improve their conditions. But this book is more than just a Trade Union history: in the course of its struggles the union was to encounter every major national problem of the last thirty years. The history of the Garment Workers' Union epitomises the history of South African itself during the period of its industrial revolution. Part of Mr. Sachs' purpose in this book is to show that the policy of segregation is not only morally indefensible, but unsound on economic grounds as well, and must inevitably retard South Africa's industrial development. 238 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
