In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. A steel engraving of the garden front of the Luxembourg Palace, Paris, after Thomas Allom, with the imprint of Fisher, Son and Co. The view looks across the parterre toward the long garden front of the palace, with its central dome and pavilions. Behind it rise the two towers of Saint-Sulpice. Fashionable couples lean on the stone balustrade in the foreground, children run past great vases held up by carved figures, and strollers fill the gravel walks between the clipped beds. The plate is lettered "Drawn by T. Allom" and "Engraved by E. Radclyffe", with the title "Garden Front of the Luxembourg, Paris", captions in French and German, "Façade du Luxembourg, côté du jardin" and "Façade des Luxembourg, von der Seite des Gartens", and the imprint "Fisher, Son and Co. London and Paris". Fisher issued Allom's views of France, with text by G.N. Wright, in the mid 1840s, so the sheet is dated circa 1845. The palace was built for Marie de' Medici in the early seventeenth century and became the seat of the French Senate. Allom's crowded, animated foregrounds are one of the pleasures of his French series. An elegant view for a living room or hallway, and a natural pair with other Paris views. The engraved image measures about 12.6 by 19.6 cm (height by width), and the margins around it carry all the original lettering, which is worth keeping visible in the mat. Condition: Light handling wear to the top left, bottom right and top right corners; minor nicks along the left edge. Light, uneven toning, slightly darker towards the edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. A pencil note in the lower right margin. This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed. In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. A rare night scene of the Boulevard des Italiens in Paris, after Eugène Lami, engraved by E. Radclyffe. A full moon hangs over the rooftops while the lit windows of a grand corner building throw light into the street. Carriages, cabs and a horse drawn omnibus crowd the roadway, gentlemen in top hats and ladies in wide skirts throng the pavement under the trees, and gas lamps glow along the boulevard. The engraver has worked the dark sky in dense ruled lines to make the lights shine. The plate is lettered "Eugene Lami" and "E. Radclyffe", with the title "Italian Boulevards", captions in French and German, "Boulevard des Italiens" and "Italiänische Boulevard", and the imprint "Fisher, Son and Co. London. H. Mandeville, Paris". It belongs to the Fisher series of views of France of the mid 1840s and is dated circa 1845. The Boulevard des Italiens was the heart of fashionable Paris under the July Monarchy, lined with cafés, theaters and clubs. Eugène Lami was the great painter of Parisian society, and this is one of the liveliest plates of the series. A striking piece for a dining room or bar, and a talking point among more conventional daylight views. The engraved image measures about 10.3 by 16.1 cm (height by width), and the margins around it carry all the original lettering, which is worth keeping visible in the mat. Condition: Light wear to the bottom left and bottom right corners. Age toning; handling soiling along the edges and foxing with some brown staining in the margins. Printed image clean. This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
