The first mention of this aerodrome is on 15th May 1915 when Flight Commander Hyde-Thomson (RNAS) was awarded Pilot Certificate No. 1245 flying a Bristol Biplane from here. He also listed flying a Wight Seaplane from CALSHOT. Between 1915 and 1919 it was used to train around 1,000 pilots before they were sent to Europe, shortly afterwards the aerodrome closed in 1919. This 'in-house' magazine named 'The Chingflier' had a short history and was published between October 1916 to February 1918. Contains 38 (including the covers) printed pages of text with monochrome illustrations and photographs throughout, including full-page cartoons specially drawn for 'The Chingflier' by W. FIRST EDITION, frontispiece and 29 further monochrome plates of work, a couple of faint spots to prelims, pp. [xi], Plates, 4to, original quarter natural linen with dark brown boards, printed labels to backstrip and upper board, that to latter faintly spotted, a few spots to edges and endpapers, tail edge roughtrimmed, dustjacket foxed, very good. Inscribed by Heath on the flyleaf, to a fellow artist: 'Muirhead Bone, with E.M. Heath's grateful remembrances, July 1935'. Ellen Maurice Heath, taught by Walter Sickert (who painted her portrait), was a painter of landscapes and portraits; amongst her sitters for those in the latter category, included here, were Joseph Conrad, Edward Garnett, and the young David Garnett. Heath had, in fact, by the time of this publication, been Edward Garnett's companion for almost forty years, and was later described by the son in his memoir as 'practically one of our family'. She was the daughter of rural author Richard Heath, and her work was admired by D.H. Lawrence, who considered in a letter to Eddie Marsh that 'she does some awfully original things'.
