Descriptions by Mrs Thomas Hardy (Florence E. Dugdale) (1879-1937), second wife of novelist Thomas Hardy and author of several children's books.

Interior clean and plates bright. Some shelf wear to the edges.

Large quarto (29 cm) in pictorial paper over boards, nineteen fine colour plates depicting baby birds laid down on heavy card. Florence Dugdale (1879- 1837) was Thomas Hardy's second wife; Hardy was a contributor to this her first book. Covers worn, plates near Fine.

First edition, pairing Detmold's botanical illustrations with Maeterlinck's nature essays. "Detmold's finest plates are those produced for The Fables of Aesop (1909), The Life of the Bee (1911), and Hours of Gladness (1912), the latter with texts after Maurice Maeterlinck, the Belgian poet, naturalist and mystic. A painting of chrysanthemums, contained in Hours of Gladness, is a glorious acknowledgement of the artist's debt to William Morris and Burne Jones" (Larkin, p. 10). Beige boards with cloth spine, full color circular pastedown, light shelf wear, mild darkening to bottom of board, spotting and discoloration to endpapers, a few fox spots to prelims, all color plates fine; the rare dust jacket is present though repaired, worn and missing pieces at spine ends and bottom of front panel. A book about 19 different baby birds, each description paired with a full page color plate mounted on wove paper. Size: Thick 4to.

First Detmold edition of the Nobel laureate's 1901 classic. Quarto. With 13 mounted colour plates. With publisher's promotional bookmark loosely inserted. Original vellum, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, rear cover and pastedowns with bee roundel in gilt and black, edges uncut. Vellum soiled, spine toned and a little cocked, extremities rubbed and gently bumped, contents clean and bright: a very good copy.

First Detmold edition, signed limited issue, number 32 of 750 copies signed by the artist. The texts are taken from translated versions by Sir Roger L'Estrange and Rev. G. F. Townsend. Contemporary reviews recognized the fine work of the artist coupled with a high standard of book production. The Graphic stated that "the drawings of the animals are remarkably lifelike, notably the picture of the monkeys and their mother. The book. looks very handsome". The Tatler noted that "Detmold has illustrated this beautiful volume, and his pictures are exquisite in their delicacy, in their subdued colouring, and in their wonderful variety and charm".
