Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 8vo (25 cm), [4], 180 pp., 17 plates (some folding). Large paper copy in contemporary half crimson morocco over red-and-brown marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments with elaborate scrollwork and floral tools, gilt-lettered title and gilt date at foot; internally clean and fresh on fine paper. First and only edition of this handsomely produced study by Eustache-Hyacinthe Langlois (1777-1837), the noted Rouen antiquary, artist, and historian of medieval art, celebrated for his researches on Norman Gothic architecture and the iconography of the Danse macabre. In this work he turns his attention to the history of the book, offering a survey of the development of calligraphy and illumination from antiquity through the Middle Ages, with particular emphasis on the decorative programmes of the earliest printed Books of Hours, where manuscript traditions persisted in typographic form. Combining antiquarian erudition with the trained eye of a draftsman, Langlois provides both historical analysis and visual documentation through the accompanying plates. A charming and still valuable early contribution to the study of manuscript illumination and the transition from manuscript to print culture.

Hardcover. Zustand: . ~ ~ NOTE: THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK IS CURRENTLY REDUCED! ~ ~ (illustrator). 1st Edition. Crown quarto. Pp. xvi, 412. Plus 9 folding maps, some of which printed in additional colours and 10 panoramic folding views, all loosely inserted in rear pocket as issued. Text figure. HARDCOVER, bound in contemporary black half cloth and matching marbled boards, spine reattached; old shelf ticket, old military institutional stamps to half-title and title and to corner of all maps, endpapers bit foxed. In good condition, very good maps and plates. ~ FIRST EDITION. Rare. The panoramic views are particularly interesting and most uncommon in modern book production. These are 10 reproductions of very realistic hand-drawn views in pencil and charcoal, possibly made after reconnaissance photographs but most likely drawn in-situ by the military artist Commander Bonnefoy, who has signed each drawing. Each view is accompanied by extended legend printed in letterpress at bottom, and with place names and topographic points of reference indicated with arrows. These beautiful views are reproduced here in collotype, one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. E-4 IN.
