Dans cet ouvrage, issu d'un mémoire gagnant du concours de la Société royale de Mé…decine de Bordeaux, le médecin-philosophe F. Dubois parvient à cerner avec cohérence une maladie que l'histoire de la médecine avait toujours maintenue en marge, et à laquelle il propose tant une explication rationnelle de sa genèse et de son fonctionnement que des voies de traitement concrètes. Il inaugure également une méthode d'individuation nosologique nouvelle, sur la base de laquelle il peut alors déployer une conception renouvelée de la médecine et du rôle du médecin, autour d'une méthodologie explicite. Frédéric Elionor Dubois, dit Frédéric Dubois d'Amiens, né à Amiens le 30 décembre 1797, et mort à Paris le 10 janvier 1873 fut élu membre de l'Académie de médecine en 1836 puis son secrétaire perpétuel entre 1847 et 1873. Dans cet ouvrage très remarqué intitulé "Histoire philosophique de l'hypocondrie et de l'hystérie", il distingue bien les deux pathologies. Il s'est opposé à la notion de magnétisme animal. C…e splendide recueil de 60 gravures à l'aquatinte représente la tour des prisons, la tour de Diesse, celle du Donjon, l'église collégiale de Notre-Dame, le cénotaphe des Comtes de Neuchâtel, de Fribourg et de Hochberg, le château de Neuchâtel, et autres églises, châteaux et bâtiments avec leurs détails. La partie de texte contient une notice sur Frédéric Du Bois de Montpéreux (1798-1850), dessinateur et professeur d'archéologie à l'Académie de Neuchâtel (dès 1843), qui ne put achever cet ouvrage dont il n'existe que cette première partie. Selon la table d?explication des planches il n?y a pas les planches 39, 40, et 45 qui n?ont pas été achevées par feu Mr. Du Bois, par contre il y a une planche 25 b. en plus.
