Including engraved title-page. 5 works bound into 1. 4to. Contemporary speckled calf, attractive period end papers.I. The first edition of the most influential horticultural manual from the period of the Netherlands supremacy in garden art and experimentation in plant sciences. Jan van Groen was royal gardener to the Prince of Orange, and his book, the first in this set, combines both garden design and architecture, and details of the cultivation of fruit and flowers; he covers, among other operations, grafting, the training of vines and nurturing of seeds under glass. The unusually striking illustrations give a vivid idea of the layout of contemporary gardens, and include the princely country seats of Ryswick, Honsholredyck and Huys ten Bosch; there are numerous designs for flowerbeds, several for pergolas and trellises (original contributions specially drawn for this work by Pieter Post (1608-69), the Dutch architect and painter), also sundials, cloches and Dutch greenhouses for nursery seedlings. The charming engraving of an orangery with world map on the wall (a reminder of the contemporary extent of the Dutch Empire) shows rows of small potted trees warmed by a wall-flued stove, and detailed illustrations of the stages of growth of lemon, orange and fig trees. Van der Groen s work continued to be published well into the 18th century; a French and a German translation appeared in the same year as the first edition (1669).nII-V. Pieter Nyland, author of the four following books, was a doctor and horticulturist; his works provide a complementary calendar of garden operations, a medical manual for household and farm use, advice on distilling and bee-keeping, and a book of cooking recipes with index of essential ingredients. The present copy of these five works generally found together differs from the Hunt copy (see below) in that Van der Groen s work is here placed at the beginning; it is normally placed second in the first edition, but is placed first in the second 1670 edition; well preserved copies, tailend margin of final title leaf neatly restored, small wormhole running through inner margin of first work. Hunt 314; Bitting, pp613-615.

London, published by George Pulley [c1737] Mezzotint half-length portrait of the artist wearing a fur hat, sitting, holding brushes and a palette, his right arm resting on a canvas; sheet c 26.2 x 36.5cm; platemark c 25 x 35.5cm. Thomas Hudson, a fashionable portrait painter, friend of William Hogarth and teacher of Joshua Reynolds, employed drapery painters (painters of costume for other artists) to assist him; one of the most talented was his sitter, Josef van Haeken (1699 -1749), a Flemish genre and portrait painter, recognized as one of the greatest drapery painters of early Georgian England, where he was known as Joseph Van Aken . Many English portrait painters used his skill for painting the lavish dresses worn by sitters of other artists in the manner of Van Dyck s portraits. John Faber (the Younger), prolific Dutch engraver, became the foremost London mezzotint portraitist; his publisher, George Pulley, was a London map and print-seller. 4to. 1 p. Shipping order to a Dutch railroad company to transport Jongkind's painting "Paysage Hollandais, effet de soleil couchant" to the art dealer Pierre-Firmin Martin in Paris: "Le soussigné déclare d'envoyer par l'administration du chemin de fer Hollandais Belge à l'adresse de Monsieur Martin, rue Mogador, n° 20 au coin de la rue St Nicolas à Paris, une caisse e bois marquée J contenant un tableau peint à l'huile représentant un paysage Hollandais, dans les environs de Rotterdam, Effet de une [!] soleil couchant. Valeur du tableau 300,- francs". The painting would be exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1859 and win a third class medal. - In 1855 Jongkind had been forced to leave Paris and return to the Netherlands due to his disastrous financial situation. However, he never felt at home in Rotterdam, suffering mentally and physically, while also continuing to accrue debt. With Martin's help, he exhibited at the Salon of Dijon in 1858 and won a second prize and the Paris Salon of 1859. Worried by his mental state and grave financial situation, a group of his friends, including Camille Corot, Charles Daubigny, Gustave Doré, Jules Dupré, and Théodore Rousseau, organized a charity auction of Jongkind's and their own works at Drouot on 7 April 1860. The proceedings enabled them to settle Jongkind's debt and facilitate his much-desired return to Paris. Today Jongkind, who later in his life mentored younger friends such as Alfred Sisley and Claude Monet, is regarded as an important forerunner of impressionism. - Somewhat brittle and toned. With minor tears and insignificant damage due to ink corrosion.

In den Warenkorb8vo. 3 1/2 pp. To his friend, the Swiss architect Alfred Roth (19031998) about his new book, which he is trying to get published with Roth's help. The challenging endeavor is not progressing smoothly, and Mondrian comforts his friend with the assurance that his thoughts would still be avant-garde for the world tomorrow. []" - Alfred Roth worked in Le Corbusier's studio in 1927/1928, collaborated with Ingrid Wallberg as an architect in Gothenburg from 1928 to 1930, and established his own architectural firm in Zurich in 1931. The mentioned "cercle" in the letter is indeed quite illustrious. The book referred to in the letter, concerning its publication, is "L'Art nouveau La Vie nouvelle (La culture des rapports purs)"; it remained unpublished during Mondrian's lifetime. The Swedish sociologist and journalist Sven Bäcklund had met Roth in Le Corbusier's studio in the late 1920s. He wrote for the socialist daily newspaper 'Ny Tid'. The letter is printed in: Piet Mondrian/Alfred Roth. Correspondance. Editions Galimard, 1994. p. 71f.
