Er lebte und arbeitete zur Zeit der toskanischen Großherzöge in Florenz, d. h. in jener friedlichen Stadt, deren große Vergangenheit durch die Reisenden gerade eben erst wieder entdeckt wurde. Als Bildhauer hat Dupré mitten in der Auseinandersetzung zwischen akademischem Idealismus und modernem Realismus gestanden; er schuf Portraits, Denkmäler usw. und war gewissermaßen Lieferant der großen Gesellschaft, der aufkommenden Museen und Weltausstellungen.
