In den WarenkorbOriginal brochure, 14*21 cm. Zustand: Gut. 20 p., ill. Spine a little light-stained, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text by Amada Cruz: Jeanne Dunning began exhibiting her work during the late 1980s amid the preoccupation with the body then influencing the art of the time. Her lushly colored photographs of body fragments and food confront systems of representation such as landscape, still life, portraiture, and the nude. Earlier in the decade artists such as Sherrie Levine and Cindy Sherman, who employed photography to address issues of authorship, gender, and the workings of a patriarchal society, paved the way for such analysis. Levine has appropriated images from the mostly male history of art, including reshoots of photographs by Walker Evans. Sherman has presented her own versions of the stereotypical media images of women such as the glamorous movie star and soft-porn queen. Dunnings work fits within the context of this line of inquiry while expanding her own investigations. This exhibition presents her most recent work including her first video and video installation. Dunnings concern with photographic truth began in 1987. In that year she captioned a series of close-up photographs of natural settings with the names of camouflaged insects. What was visible, however, did not match the claim of the caption. Furthermore, the photographs veracity as a record of nature was unclear, thus subverting the objectivity of scientific documentation. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…

In den WarenkorbFirst editions. Dunning's artist's book Heads, a curated selection of photographs from her series of the same name, challenges gender power dynamics: "if someone is looking at me and they know it they've given me power. I have something they want" (p. [xv]). It is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue for her 1991 solo show Bodies of Work. Jeanne Dunning (born 1960) studied at Oberlin College and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, and first exhibited at the Feature Gallery in Chicago in 1987. Her surreal photography and film works investigate corporeality, human physicality, and gender. An essay in the exhibition catalogue for Bodies of Work, written by the artist Laurie Palmer, observes that "Dunning's refusal is a tease and a slap in the face. In the series called Heads, attention is diverted. to the phallic shape of the woman's bobbed haircut. But the message from artist to viewer is, more simply, fuck you" (p. 4). Together, 2 items: small octavo, pp. [xx], 8 monochrome photographs; quarto exhibition catalogue. Heads with photographic covers, spiral-bound; Bodies of Work with photographic wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in blue. Pages of Heads just creased at head of spine, tiny scratches to covers; Bodies of Work extremities a little creased, small tear to centre and foot of spine, sides just rubbed: Heads near fine, Bodies of Work very good.…
