Hardcover. Zustand: poor. 8vo. 221 pp. + 1 b/2 facsimile etching and 2 pp. of sheet music of the song "Mourir Pour La Patrie" by Alexander Dumas and F. Alphonse. "The present work is offered to the public as a timely exposition of the opening of a new era in history . ." from advertisement inside book. The February 1848 revolution ended the July Monarchy (1830-1848), replaced by the Second Republic (1848-1852), giving a lethal blow to the hopes of a "Social and Democratic Republic" ("la République sociale et démocratique", or "La Sociale"). In 1848, political gatherings and demonstrations were outlawed in France. Therefore activists held a series of fundraising banquets, the Campagne des banquets, to circumvent this restriction and provide a legal outlet for popular criticism of the regime. In February, however, the French government under Louis Philippe forbade such banquets partly leading to the revolution. This work was written the very year of the revolution. Illustrated throughout with a number of b/w facsimile etchings of important and prominent figures as well as soliders. Frontis piece. Spine absent and boards detached but present. In poor condition.
