Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The ways in which literary works begin have proved fascinating to readers and critics at least since Aristophanes. This collection of essays gives life to a topic of perennial interest by presenting a variety of original readings in nearly all the major genres of Greek and Latin literature. The subjects of these essays range from narrative voices in the opening of the Odyssey to ideological reasons for Tacitus' choice of a beginning in the Histories, and from a survey of opening devices in Greek poetry to the playwright's negotiations with the audience in Roman comedy. Other papers discuss 'false starts' in Gorgias and Herodotus, the prologues of Greek tragedy, Plato's 'frame' dialogues, delayed proems in Virgil, the role of the patron in Horace, aristocratic beginnings in Seneca, and 'inappropriate' prefaces in Plutarch. By embracing a variety of authors and a broad range of approaches, from formal analysis of opening devices to post-structural interpretation, these twelve contributions by both younger and established scholars offer an exciting new perspective on beginnings in classical literature.…

Zustand: Wie Neu. Zustandsbeschreibung: textsauberes Exemplar mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren, leicht berieben/clean text pages, minor traces of use, slightly rubbed. Closure and Innovation in Euripidean Drama. Dunn explores the novel gestures that close the dramas of Euripides, showing how these deny access to an authoritative reading of the plays, reinforce innovations in plot and structure, and open up tragedy to comic, parodic, and narrative impulses. The author provides a large-scale study of closure in classical literature, and includes readings of plot, ending, and generic innovation in 'Hyppolytus', 'Trojan women', 'Hercules', and the late plays 'Helen', 'Orestes', and 'Phoenician Women'. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth, with silver titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout, and without inscriptions. There is a publisher's 'damaged' stamp to the title page (although no notable damage is visible other than a small black pen mark to the bottom edge of the closed text block). Complete with the near fine, lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper, which is just a little toned to the extreme top edge, and otherwise without loss, or tears. The author argues that the infamous and artificial endings in Euripides' works deny the viewer access to a stable or authoritative reading of the play, and offers the first large-scale study of closure in classical literature through close examinations of plot, ending, and generic innovation in 'Hippolytus', 'Trojan Women', 'Heracles', 'Helen', 'Orestes', and 'Phoenician Women'. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. All items are catalogued by humans. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.…
