I had about twenty to choose from, but they were mostly too small"- Volume 1, page 107. "From there we were taken into the Chhos Khang, or sacred room, sometimes called the book-room, as the Buddhist holy books are all kept there. This room would answer to a chapel in any Christian monastery, for it is in here they assemble to read their Scriptures, and more often the writings of some Lama than the words of Buddha. In the centre of this room was a gaudily painted throne, on which sits the incarnation, and on his right is another highly decorated pedastal, on which sits a gilded image of Buddha"- Volume 1, page 133-134. "The whole configuration of the country has undergone a complete change since we crossed the Karakoram pass. Instead of being shut into nullahs and gorges and deep gullies, and walled in by the precipitous rocks of giant snow-clad mountains, we are now in an open country of vast plains and distant hills and the temperature has altered with the scenery"- Volume One, page 209.

Earl of Dunmore is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. Charles Adolphus Murray, 7th Earl of Dunmore VD (24 March 1841 - 27 August 1907), styled Viscount Fincastle from birth until 1845, was a Scottish peer, Conservative politician, explorer, author, and artist. He traveled to North America to observe the American Civil War with a number of other British officers. He then traveled at least as far as Manitoba and painted a number of watercolors across the United States and Canada. In 1874, he was appointed a Lord-in-waiting in Disraeli's government, a post he held until 1880. In 1875, he was made Lord Lieutenant of Stirlingshire, which he remained until 1885. In 1882 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Inverness-shire Rifle Volunteers (later the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders). He retired in 1896. In 1892-93 he traveled through the eastern Pamirs to Kashgar. He was engaged in some form of diplomacy or espionage but the matter is not clear. Excerpt from The Revelation of Christianus and Other Christian Science Poems ; Here has come in the midst of human strife A doctrine from heaven above, Which teaches that God is the only life, And life is both truth and love. This doctrine, when new to the world at large, Was the oldest of Christian word, 'twas our Master's precept, our Master's charge.

Soft cover. Very good. Even overall toning. Light wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations. Blank on verso. Size 8.75 x 23.25 Inches. This is an 1893 map by William and Alexander Keith Johnston of Central Asia, published by the Royal Geographic Society, to trace the route taken by the Earl of Dunmore in his travels through Kashmir, the Xinjiang province of China, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and through Turkmenistan to the Caspian Sea. The region - largely a Chinese frontier - was the site of significant Russian efforts to exert influence at the time, and it is in that context that the Earl of Dunmore's journey took place. Following the track, for example, one sees what appears to be a curious detour into the Pamir mountains between Yarkand and Kashgar; here, Dunmore's expedition was following a Chinese force sent to counter Russian incursions Aktash region. The region was also the site of conflict between Russian and Afghan forces - indeed, the journey took place only a few years before the border between Russia and Afghanistan was set with the signing of the Pamir Boundary Commission protocols in 1895. Dunmore's return route from Samarkand was undertaken on the Russian Trans-Caspian Railway; constructed in order to facilitate Russian troop movements along the frontier, the British considered this railway to be a particular threat to their interests in Asia. The Great Game - the struggle for Afghanistan From 1830 until 1895, a political and diplomatic confrontation, known as 'The Great Game', existed between the British Empire and the Russian Empire over Afghanistan and other territories in Central and Southern Asia. 'The Great Game', as it is known, was ignited due to Russian fears that Britain was making commercial and military inroads in Central Asia, while Britain mutually feared Russia adding 'the jewel in the crown' (India) to its vast empire in Asia. Several wars were fought, including the First Anglo-Afghan War in 1838, the First Anglo-Sikh War in 1845, the Second Anglo-Sikh War in 1848, and the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1878, along with the Russian annexations of Khiva, Bukhara, and Kokand. Per historians, the Great Game ended on September 10, 1895 with the signing of the Pamir Boundary Commission protocols, which defined the border between Afghanistan and the Russian Empire. Publication History and Census The map was published in the Geographical Journal of 1893 to accompany the Earl of Dunmore's account of his journey. The separate map is catalogued only once in institutional collections, at the University of Chicago. The map appears to be scarce on the market. References: OCLC 71212659.

Murray commences his preface: "The accompanying reproduction, in Autotype, of rough pen and ink and water-coloured sketches, made mostly be by me at various times and in various places, constitute the first volume of a projected series of drawings, representing the result thirty-five years- travel in different parts of the world." Howgego records his travels: "Dunmore's inherited wealth provided the means for travel in African and the Arctic, but as an explorer he is best known for his journey through Central Asia. Starting from Rawalpindi in April 1892 and travelling by foot and on horseback, he crossed the Pamirs to arrive in Kashgar the continued west into the Ferghana valley of Russian Turkestan to reach Samarkand in January 1893. His account of the journey, The Parmirs published after his return to England in 1893, describes his 4000- kilometer journey, during which he scaled forty-one mountain passes and crossed sixty-nine rivers." The work commences with five images of Spitzbergen, before moving on to Hammerfest "the northernmost town in Europe", Lapland and the Tana River (Finland). It then moves to the Circassian coast and the Caucasus, Georgia, and then Russian Central Asia and Chinese Turkestan before the large group depicting the Parmirs.
