Irvin Feld & Kenneth Feld created for the first Disney On Ice Show in Town City on September 1st, 1981, it was called: Walt Disney Productions' World On Ice. Among the featured performers are Linda Fratianne, Kellie Jenckes, Vern Taylor, Gerard Soules, Little Lito, Bruno Jerry, Canestrelli, Michael Botticelli, Sheryl Franks, Jim Sladky, Judy Sladky, and Nick Maricich. An ice show is an entertainment production which is primarily performed by ice skaters. The major ice shows were founded between 1936 and 1943, when professional figure skaters began to appear in shows and "at any place a sheet of ice could be set up . They were produced and toured North America, Europe, and throughout the world for many years in the years following World War II. According to figure skating historian James R. Hines, ice shows "took spectacular skating to large audiences, contributing to the development of the sport's first major fan base". Such shows may primarily be skating exhibitions, or may be musical and/or dramatic in nature, using skating as a medium in order to accompany a musical work or to present a story. Many companies produce fixed or touring ice shows, which are then performed for the general public in facilities such as multipurpose arenas or skating rinks which can accommodate spectators, or in theaters with a temporary ice surface installed on the stage. Walt Disney's World on Ice is a series of touring ice shows produced by Feld Entertainment's Ice Follies And Holiday on Ice, Inc. division under agreement with The Walt Disney Company. Aimed primarily at children, the shows feature figure skaters portraying the roles of Disney characters in performances derived from various Disney films. Feld Entertainment licensed the rights to Disney material for ice shows and includes shared merchandising revenue between Disney and Ice Follies. Soon after Mattel's Irvin & Kenneth Feld Productions purchased Ice Follies and Holiday on Ice in 1979, the company approached Disney about doing a Disney-related show on ice. Feld Productions licensed the rights to Disney material for ice shows. In 1981, they began productions under the name Walt Disney's World on Ice. In March 1982, Irvin & Kenneth Feld purchased back Feld Productions from Mattel including Ice Follies/Walt Disney's World on Ice. In 1987, Walt Disney's World on Ice made its international debut in Japan with Happy Birthday Donald. In 1988, the company had five touring shows. The name was changed to "Disney on Ice" in 1998. By 2008, a new show was launched every year. The show is usually hosted by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, assisted at times by Goofy and Donald Duck. The series also implements characters and stories from recently released Disney films as a cross-promotion tactic, with each subject changing as the show annually updates.

No Binding. Zustand: Fine. New York: Kenn Duncan, [ca. 1970s]. Set of seven (7) vintage original 14 x 11" (36 x 28 cm.) oversize double weight black-and-white print still photos. All with the stamp of photographer Kenn Duncan on verso, one with the sticker of the Cabaret nightclub. Fine. After Dark was an entertainment magazine which was in print from 1968-83. Its primary readership was upscale gay men, especially those interested in the performing arts. Kenn Duncan was its principal photographer. The New York Public Library has a sizable collection of his photos in its collection. This set of photos are of drag performers, very definitely including ones of color, at a drag nightclub in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, called the Cabaret. Each photo has a holograph notation on verso, presumably in Duncan's hand. In all, the photos document five different performers. One photo shows three of them in a drag version of Swan Lake. One performer named Heidi is noted as being Puerto Rican. Another shows a Brandy Alexander as Shirley Temple. Drag photos are rarely seen in such a sumptuous format, or rendered with such painstaking artistry. This is a wonderful little archive.
