Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Do Paul's letters draw on ethnic stereotypes Did they influence how ethnic and racial outsiders were viewed in later eras In this volume, Matthijs den Dulk offers a series of case studies that analyze different ways in which ethnic stereotypes were used or exerted influence on Pauline writings. Informed by recent empirical research on the impact of stereotypes, Den Dulk shows that paying attention to ancient stereotypes about Galatians, Corinthians, Scythians, Cretans and other groups sheds significant new light on the context, composition and content of Paul's letters. Den Dulk's exegetical argument integrates analyses of the history of interpretation, which demonstrate that Paul's letters were used to support modern conceptions of ethnic difference, including racist theories. This study thus raises important and timely questions about the content of Paul's letters as well as their influence on subsequent ideas about race and ethnicity. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Many surviving early Christian writings are in the form of letters, some sent by and to those named, others imagined. What did the authors, copyists, and later collectors intend by authoring or reworking letters, as opposed to other genres How did the first or subsequent readers respond, differently perhaps than to a novel or history In her Radboud Prestige Lectures in New Testament, published in this volume, Judith Lieu explores these questions by drawing on the concept of 'epistolarity.' Her lectures are followed by chapters by leading experts in the field who engage her work from different angles, finding points of contact and potential conversation between different texts and authors, together with possibilities for further exploration and application.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The second century is a crucial period for the formation of both Judaism and Christianity, but remains in important ways terra incognita. This volume brings together specialists in Jewish studies and Christian studies, two closely related disciplines that nonetheless continue to operate in relative isolation. Taking into consideration the full panoply of Jewish and Christian identities, the volume proposes fresh ways to map the interrelated histories of Jews and Christians. Contributions by leading scholars offer new insights into this period informed by a rich variety of perspectives, including theoretical, literary, thematic and material approaches.
