In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Good. This is an original signed handwritten letter from Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester, dated November 18th, 1827 and sent from Gloucester House. The recipient was believed to be Sir George Ralph Collier, a friend and member of the Prince's household. The letter measures approx. 21 × 13cm, and has been written on both sides. The letter reads "Gloucester House, Nov 18th 1827. My dear Collier, I had yesterday the pleasure of receiving your very obliging Letter & I hasten to return to you my best Thanks for it & for your Congratulations upon my Appointment to the Government of Portsmouth which is very gratifying to me & which the King conferred upon me in the most Kind & Affectionate Manner. I am very happy to find that Lady Collier is so much better & only upset that she is not yet sufficiently recovered for her to be able to visit her Friends. Very sensibly do I feel the warm interest you are so good as to take in everything that concerns me & with great satisfaction I seize every opportunity of assuring you with the sincerest Regard & Esteem I am always, My dear Collier, Most Truly Yours, William Frederick". Prince William Frederick was a great grandson of George II, and the son-in-law of George III. George IV, who had just appointed him the prestigious position of Governor of Portsmouth, was his cousin and brother-in-law. Condition: Good condition for age. The letter has been folded twice and has some light wear to the left hand margin but it remains readable and William Frederick's signature is clear. Signed by Author(s).

In den WarenkorbSee Taylor's entry, and that of Princess Sophia's brother William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh (1776-1834), in the Oxford DNB. Bagshot Park was the residence of her brother the duke (Silly Billy'), to whom she was very much attached. The siblings were not entirely accepted by the Royal Family due to the unequal nature of their parents' marriage. 3pp, 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded for postage. Taylor, who is not named but is clearly the recipient, has marked the letter as 'Private'. Good firm signature 'Sophia Matilda'. Begins: 'Dear Sir / I did not receive your Communication dated the 12th untill [sic] this morning, and I hasten to express my thanks for your Attention, and to request that you would have the Goodness to forward the small Parcel containing the kind Legacy from the late Queen at Wirtemberg to me at Bagshot Park in an [office packing?] as you sent those destined for the Dss of Gloucester which she received yesterday -'. She sends wishes for Lady Taylor's continuing health, 'notwithstanding the bad weather which we have had'.

In den Warenkorb1p, 4to. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded three times. The letter reads: 'My dear Duke | I have much gratification in acquainting Your Grace that I have placed Mr Edward Gage in my Regiment, and I am sure You will believe that it affords me great satisfaction to have had so early an opportunity of meeting Your Wishes It will be necessary for him to lodge the purchase money at Messrs. Greenwood & Co's Craigs Court | I seize with great eagerness every Opportunity of renewing to Your Grace an Assurance of the very great Regard with which | I am My dear Duke | very sincerely Yours | William Frederick'. Accession number in a Victorian hand at top left: '6985'. The Duke's entry in the Oxford DNB marks the contrast between a 'plethora of academic distinctions' and 'his renowned lack of intelligence: his most widely used nickname was Silly Billy'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

The sheer number of visitors confirms the belief that Mary was one of the most sociable and amiable of George IIIÕs children. From this book, it would appear she was receiving on average about twenty guests a day, and sometimes over thirty. Perhaps the number of foreign royalty was swelled by the upheavals in Europe in 1848.Gloucester House was purchased by Prince William shortly before his marriage. It is where Princess Mary died. Queen Victoria wrote acknowledging how she had become the matriarch of the family, ÔHer age, and her being a link with bygone times and generations . . . rendered her more and more dear and precious to us all, and we all looked upon her as a sort of grandmother'.
