Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. Duhousset, E. (illustrator). 1st Edition. A fascinating book, translated from the French. 1st ed. In good overall condition, bound in a mustard cloth with silver lettering and motifs to the boards and spine. The title on the upper is worn slightly. No dust jacket, probably as published. Cloth boards are soiled and worn but in fairly good condition. The corners have some bumping and wear, and the spine shows wear to the crown and foot but minor. The binding is tight. Pages have occasional marks throughout but illustrations are all intact. Edges are soiled and tanned. The crazed designed end-papers are slightly tanned around the edges. The half-title page is tanned but has the signature in pencil of (Sir) "Muirhead Bone,1910", the famous Scottish etcher, watercolourist and War artist, who probably used this work in his studies of horse anatomy, in his Glasgow series, for example. A very interesting study.

Lacking the illustrated plates, hinges starting, and some overall wear and toning, still a good or better copy with the text complete. "Printed for members and not for sale" (translated from the verso of the half-title page). "Private printing press of the Society of Comparative Anthropology and Ethnology" (translated from the title page). An account of the sexual mores of the region we would refer to as the Middle East today, including the cruel manner in which many women and girls were being controlled physically and sexually at the time, which involved circumcision, infibulation, and even accounts of contraptions one might refer to as chastity belts; as well as the documentation of the many sexual taboos taking place in the region at the time, an instance of a woman getting another woman pregnant, the use of stimulants, and descriptions of eunuchs encountered in Russia and Egypt. A historically and sociologically important yet often unsettling piece of documentation deserving of further study. *OCLC* locates only 3 copies.
