Sporadic closed tears repaired with non-abrasive tape. Page 7/8 repaired but suffered some minor loss of text. Upper half of pp. 93/94 heavily foxed, thus affecting the upper image of each facing plate. Moderate closed tears, foxing and age-toning along paper margin (not affecting text or plates). Text in Dutch. Captions in Dutch and French. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good to good+, plates in very good, images in near fine to fine condition. About the author: Ysbrand van Hamelsveld (1743-1812) was a Dutch Reformed minister and professor of theology. This radical Patriot had preached patriotism from the pulpit and even had called upon the male members of his flock to take up arms against stadtholder, William V. Forced to resign his offices after 1787 (when the troops of Frederick William II of Prussia crushed the Patriots), Van Hamelsveld became a professional writer and translator.

Original etching of Madame Law drawing in an oval of a Lady in a nice dress in a bedroom? with a monkey on the left side. Satire on the financial crisis in 1720; An oval portrait of Madame Law, finely dressed in a tricorne hat with feathers, set against the background of the Doge's Palace in Venice at carnival time; the column at the entrance to St Mark's Square is surmounted by the monogram "LL" (for Law of Lauriston).Based on a work by the Venetian portraitist Rosalba Carriera (16731757), this print depicts John Law's common-law wife and partner-in-crime, Lady Katherine Knollys. After Law's "System" collapsed, she fled to Venice, and her portrait here consequently evokes a "Wanted" sign: surrounded by an elaborate frame, she holds a Carnival mask, while the Doge's Palace and a group of commedia dell'arte revelers appear in the background. In the inscription below the image, she boasts of her husband's cunning, claiming that she will take charge of their affairs, or "act the part of both man and wife," until their "honor" can be restored.satire, commerce/finance, masquerade, carnival, costume/clothing[NL] Ovaal portret van madame Law, ca. 1720.
