The book consists of a series of thirty-two letters addressed to his brother, and most of the letters describe the events and the environment of the Rajputana region, beginning with an account of a journey from Agra to Kerowli. The letters which follow all contain fascinating descriptions of festivals and other events, and cultural encounters of all kinds, painting a vivid portrait of life for the British in early nineteenth-century India. The book contains 32 chapters and an index. It has nine illustrations and a map. It was first published in 1813. About the Author:-Thomas Duer Broughton (17781835) was an English soldier and writer on India. Broughton was son of the Reverend Thomas Broughton, rector of St. Peter's, Bristol. He was educated at Eton, and went to India in 1795 as a cadet in the East India Company's Bengal Army. He became a lieutenant in 1797 and fought at the siege of Seringapatam in 1799. He was later appointed adjutant and assistant teacher of Hindi to the Cadet Company at Barasett.In 1802 he was appointed military resident with the Mahrattas. He published his experiences in a book entitled Letters Written in a Mahratta Camp During the Year 1809, descriptive of the character, manners, domestic habits, and religious ceremonies of the Mahrattas (1813). During this period he also collected Hindi poems from the oral tradition, publishing his transcriptions and translations as Selections from the Popular Poetry of the Hindoos (1814). The intention of the letters, mainly to his brother in England, were to satisfy his brother's curiosities of his travels and experiences. The author certainly provides his brother with descriptive accounts of customs, festivals, weather and every other aspect of everyday life. The letters are lengthy but intriguing and informative.
