The book examines how a system of differentiation and stratification, inherited from colonial times, persists in its essential form in the current time despite attempts to dislodge it. While not falling prey to a structural determinism, the book argues, based on the evidence provided through both a historical sociological review of historical evidence and a presentist analysis of cross-sectional data on business ownership, that actions which coincide with the logic of social structures tend to prevail over actions which take that logic for granted. It is for this reason that political and social players with grand ideals have been less successful in their attempts to bridge the social and economic divides in the country, than those players whose interests coincided with the structural divides.

Clifford Edwards". From Conrad Richter's personal co…llection & acquired directly from the estate of his daughter Harvena Richter in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fine hardcover, bound in the original institutional black library buckram, spine titling, rules & date in gilt, still bright; boards have minimal edge wear & there is a touch of foxing on the text edges, see photos. End papers are toned & there are dark spots at the gutter from the binding materials, commensurate with age. Page are fine. More notes about condition description below, including two annotations possibly by Richter himself. Original doctoral dissertation state, predating the 1970 Mouton trade publication of Clifford Edward's book of the same name by eight years. The doctoral committee includes prominent mid-century literary scholars including Prof. Joe Lee Davis & Lyall H Powers. The book is further enhanced by a research annotation in ink on the rear endpaper, possibly written by Richter himself as he was already in possession of the bound dissertation. It shows the subsequent 1963 publication details of the abstract: "Abstract of thesis: vol. 24. 1963, no's 3-4, pp. 911-1769". Not every page was reviewed but one margin pencil notation was observed on p. 109, see photo. Given the book was acquired directly from the Richter family estate, this notation is likely from Richter himself. Complete text was processed single-sided, presumably via an electric typewriter on premium Fox River Bond, 25% cotton watermarked paper. Pages show beautifully preserved tactile type impressions throughout. Edwards' doctoral thesis stands as a seminal analytical study of Richter's acclaimed American frontier trilogy The Awakening Land (which includes his 1951 Pulitzer Prize winning book The Town). Given the tiny production run required for university archives & committee review, physical bound master copies are scarce. A rare & evocative piece of mid-century American literary scholarship linking researcher & subject. See photos, ships same day or next day. Signature required upon delivery. Inscribed by Author(s).
