Seconde édition, corrigée, de l'ouvrage de Du Verney. C'est surtout cette édition, devenue encore plus rare que l'originale, qui contribua à sa notoriété. Elle fut traduite en plusieurs langues (latine, allemande, hollandaise puis anglaise) et devint le traité de référence en otologie pendant plus d'un siècle. Le traité de Duverney fut le premier véritable traité d'otologie, traitant de l'anatomie, de la physiologie et des affections de l'oreille. Cette monographie comporte la première description précise des osselets, ainsi que de la vascularisation et de l'innervation de l'oreille. Duverney décrit les incisures, le canalis medius et le canalis semi-circularis superior, qui porteront son nom. Il montre que les cellules mastoïdiennes communiquent avec la cavité tympanique. Il est le premier à reconnaître à la trompe dEustache un rôle d'aération de la caisse, et au labyrinthe un rôle important dans la perception des sons. Il conçoit la première théorie convenable de l'audition. En pathologie, il est le premier à contester l'origine cérébrale de l'otite, affirmant que le pus vient de la cavité tympanique. Cet ouvrage est orné de seize belles planches gravées, signées « R.Blokh F. » Guichard Joseph Duverney (1648-1730), né à Feurs, étudia la médecine à Avignon, puis partit à Paris. Il devint démonstrateur d'anatomie au Jardin du Roi, entra à l'Académie des sciences et fut nommé professeur d'anatomie. Il fut l'un des plus grands anatomistes du XVIIème siècle et un enseignant remarquable. Bei der Vorlage handelt es in Wirklichkeit um die Ausgabe, Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, (ca. 1765) - der Satz "Cet abrege d'Osteologie est extrait du Traite des Os, par M. du Verney, lequel fait partie des Oeuvres anatomiques de cet homme celebre, imprimees chez Jombert, en 1761, en deux volumes in-quarto, avec beaucoup de figures" am Schluß der Einleitung von Teil 2, führt die Datierung der Vorlage auf das Jahr 1668 ad absurdum. Rare seconde édition revue par l'auteur avant sa mort, du premier traité scientifique sur la structure, l…es fonctions et les maladies de l'oreille. La préface rappelle la rareté de l'édition originale de 1683 : " la rareté extrême du livre qu'on ne pouvait plus trouver à aucun prix. ". Célèbre anatomiste, Du Verney fit ses études médecine à Avignon puis se rendit à Paris où ses leçons devinrent vite à la mode. Devenu membre de l'Académie Royale des sciences, il fut nommé professeur d'anatomie du Dauphin puis obtint la chaire d'anatomie du Jardin du Roi, et consacra toute sa vie à l'anatomie et à des recherches d'histoire naturelle. Il est considéré comme le père de l'otologie, et le premier à suggérer la théorie de l'audition démontrée plus tard par Helmholtz. Son traité de l'ouïe décrit pour la première fois la communication de la caisse du tympan avec les cellules mastoïdiennes et montre que la corde du tambour est un nerf provenant de la 5e paire, qui traverse la caisse, et s'anastomose ensuite avec la portion dure de la 7e paire. Il y donne une description parfaite des canaux demi-circulaires et du limaçon, de même que de la distribution de la portion molle du nerf acoustique dans ces cavités, et de la membrane qui les tapisse. Il expose avec beaucoup de précisions les différences de structure de ces diverses parties chez le f?tus et l'adulte. C'est dans le labyrinthe qu'il place l'organe immédiat de l'ouie. Les planches sont d'une grande précision. Il travaillait avec Winslow, son élève, à cette seconde édition lorsque la mort le frappa en 1730. La traduction anglaise n'a paru qu'en 1737. Duverney was the first to depict the arteries, veins and nerve branches of the auricle, the first to demonstrate that the bony part of the external auditory meatus originates from the annulus tympanicum, and the fir…st to describe and illustrate the communication between the tympanic cavity and the cells of the mastoid process. He corrected a long-standing error by stating that the Eustachian tube was not an organ of breathing or hearing but simply the channel through which the air of the tympanum was renewed. His excellent account of the bony labyrinth included the first accurate description of the five vestibular openings of the semicircular canals, and a new description of the auditory nerve. Duverney believed the organs of sound perception to be the cochlea, semicircular canals and spiral lamina, and was the first to suggest the resonance theory of hearing that was later developed by Helmholtz. He also pointed out that persons afflicted with certain types of deafness can hear sound through bone conduction and gave what is believed to be the first description of a cholesteatoma (mastoid / middle ear tumor).

Guichard Joseph Duverney (1648-1730) "writings stand out because of their compactness, their wealth of content, their exemplary accuracy, and their precision of judgement. Investigation of the organ of hearing was one of his favourite fields of research. On his scientific journeys he thoroughly researched the hearing organ of fish. He summarized all his otological knowledge in the 'Traité de l'organe de l'ouie' (Treatise on the Organ of Hearing) published in 1683. He wanted to publish a new enlarged edition, in particular adding new "curious observations" presented at the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1705." "Unfortunately, he was not able to finish this work. A second edition was published a few months after his death, but without any new details, and corresponding exactly to the 1683 edition. Reprinted many times and translated in particular into Latin, German and English, this treatise surpassed all expectations and became the reference for studying otology for many decades. "It is in publishing the work on the structure of the ear that Mr Duvemey laid down the foundations of the high reputation which he has enjoyed and always will enjoy amongst anatomists; very different from those who are wont to find glory in proposing new explanations on parts which they do not know, Mr Duverney made it a rule to study the internal structure of organs and to describe them with the greatest precision before dealing with their uses and indicating their diseases. One must know the healthy state in order to make fruitful study of the diseased state. Guided by the spirit of method and illuminated by the most brilliant and solid genius Duverney collected into a small volume the most interesting truths." Duverney's treatise was a comparatively short work, but full of relevant data divided into three parts: anatomy, physiology, pathology and therapy." "Duverney's achievement in anatomy and physiology deserve recognition as the most outstanding ones of the 17th century. He initiated a new international eara of otology and his influence to progress in anatomical and physiological studies , but he also influenced understanding of the pathology of hearing." "The otological investigations of the following centuries attest to the impact Duverney's treatise had on the development of otology. Itard wrote in 1821 that "the works of J. G. Duverney occupy in the history of medicine a place no less honorable than that of Fallopio's research."
