Elève de l'école des Arts et Métiers d'Angers, il en sort ingénieur en 1894. Sa carrière est liée d'abord à l'aviation, ce qui ne l'empêchera pas de construire des canoës et bateaux de course. La fin du XIX ème siècle et le début du XX ème voient la naissance des aéroplanes.En 1904, après des études théoriques sur les hélices aériennes, qu'il avait faites aux Arts et Métiers, il entreprend des essais pratiques. En 1905, il réussit à mettre au point et à fabriquer une hélice en bois laminé de 5 mètres de diamètre pour le ballon dirigeable "Clément Bayard", piloté par Capazza. Dès sa première sortie, le record de vitesse est battu. Ce type d'hélice équipera par la suite d'autres ballons dirigeables. Le premier aviateur à monter une hélice Chauvière en bois sur un aéroplane est Alfred de Pischoff, en 1907.Lucien Chauvière perfectionne la fabrication et utilise des planches de bois contrecollées. Il dépose le brevet de son invention sous la marque "Hélice Chauvière". Le 25 juillet 1909, à 4 h 35, Blériot décolle du sol français avec son avion "Blériot XI", à moteur Anzani, traverse la Manche et se pose en Angleterre à 5 h 12. Son avion, comme beaucoup d'autres, est équipé d'une hélice "Intégrale" Chauvière.

With a manuscript table of continents at the end, folded at the fore. Bound in later (XIXc?) tree-marbled calf, with the boards recovered in tree-marbled paper to style. On the spine, 4 raised bands. Author and title gilt to red sheep in the second panel. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block glazed red. Green silk marking ribbon. The covers and end-papers renewed. Rubbing at the hinges and extremities. Two small patches of wear to the rear board. A handful of mapsheets shaved. Offsetting and bleed of the verdegris and other pigments, but altogether a bright example. Damp-stain to the fore-corners of three maps (lower: nos. 59 (Luxembourg) and 88 (Hungary); upper (apparently reversed): no. 63 (Barrois)), not affecting the image. Small loss to the lower fore-corner of the first sheet of no. 96 ("Patriarchatus"), not affecting the image. Ink manuscript numeration in an old hand (many with a struck-out number as well). Some repairs to the fore-edge of the manuscript table of contents. Extensive ink manuscript marginal note to no. 7, "L'Amerique autrement le Nouveau Monde et Indes Occidentales." Pierre du Val (Duval, 1619-1683) inherited the mantle of geographer in ordinary to the king from his uncle Nicolas Sanson. The rise of the Sanson-du Val-Vaugondy mapping dynasty parallels the fall of Dutch cartographic primacy, with maps that are more accurate and more restrained in their decorative elements. Du Val's maps at the heart of the reign of Louis XIV pointed the way to the apogee of French exploration and territorial extent. The vast complement of non-European maps (30 or so mapsheets out of 91) shows French eyes fixed on the wider world, particularly the Americas and Asia. Du Val's Cartes de Geographie, first published in 1654 and reissued 1655, 1667 and 1677, was the only folio atlas he issued in his lifetime, growing and shifting as new data flowed back to Paris from explorers. A full table of the contents of the volume has been prepared and is available upon request. Of particular note is the two suites of playing cards -- lest we think that the "gamification" of learning is new -- one for general geography and the other of the various rulers of the kingdom of Germany (the second set does not contain 52 cards but 36: 6-10 plus four "face cards" in each of the four suits); this is a variant on the jeu de l'oie, an innovation of Duval's (see Adrian Seville's 2008 article "The geographical Jeux de l'Oie of Europe"). The long marginal note to the third map (no. 7, "L'Amerique autrement Le Nouveau Monde.") summarizes an article in the August 1745 Mercure de France, a long-running periodical that embraced gossip as well as scientific papers and much besides; it has to do with the Amazon, and makes a good reference to crocodiles. Du Val's atlases are surpassingly rare; the BnF does not hold our 1679 edition. I have been able to locate only four examples of the 1679 Cartes de Geographie in institutional collections: Harvard, Map Collection GEN (MA 17.79 PF*); Michigan, Clements Atl 1679 Du (only 79 mapsheets); Toulouse (Rés. A. XVII, used as the type-specimen by Pastoureau); and Quimper (Y 92.02.97). Pastoureau, Du Val II Ea; Shirley 465 (second state) and 489 (first dated state).

Hispania, Insula Antiles, Guaiana, Castilo Doro, Peru, Chili, Terra Magellanica, Tucuman, LaPlata, Brasilia, and Insulae Capo Viridis. Maps relating to the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions include Terra Antarctica, Asia showing the East Indies, Insulae Sindae, Insulae Moluccae, as well as maps of Ceylon, the Maldives and Japan. September 1683) war ein französischer Kartograph und Verleger, der in der Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts in Paris tätig war. Er wurde in Abbeville, Picardie, Frankreich, geboren, wo sein Vater, ebenfalls Pierre, Kaufmann, Konsul und Ratsherr war. Seine Mutter war Marie Sanson, die Schwester von Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600-1667), dem führenden französischen Kartografen seiner Zeit. Du Val ging wahrscheinlich in den Werkstätten von Sanson in die Lehre. Anschließend studierte er in Paris Geografie bei Jean-Baptiste Gault, dem späteren Bischof von Marseille. Er berät Heinrich von Savoyen, den Abt von St. Sorlin, und Gilles Bouraut, den Bischof von Aire und später von Evreux, in wissenschaftlichen und geographischen Fragen. Du Val wurde 1650 zum Geographe ordinaire von Ludwig XIV. ernannt. Sein erster Atlas, die Cartes Geographiques Methodiquement Divisees aus dem Jahr 1654, enthielt nur wenige eigene Karten und wurde größtenteils aus Neuauflagen von Karten anderer Kartographen zusammengestellt. Zu Beginn seines Schaffens konzentrierte er sich auf Atlanten und geografische Abhandlungen, doch später wandte er seine Aufmerksamkeit großen, oft mehrblättrigen Karten zu, die einzeln herausgegeben wurden. In North America the Great Lakes are shown open-ended in the west and California is depicted as an Island. Above California is the Destroit d' Anien and the large Terre de Iesso, or land of Jesso, that was the result of confusing reports by De Vries on his expedition in the waters north of Japan. Several colonial settlements appear on the eastern seaboard including Iamestoun, Christina, London al: Boston, N. Amsterdam al: Manhate. In South America the mythical Parime Lake is no longer in evidence and there is good detail, particularly of the missions. A landmass appears at the bottom right labeled Partie de la grande Terre Australe. The map was originally engraved in 1655 and appeared in several states until Duval's death in1683. Perry, states that Du Val's map is: "one of the earliest French maps to depict Australia as defined by Tasman's two voyages, show[ing] the East Indian archipelagos of Indonesia and the Philippines and the entire area between the Cape of Good Hope and Japan and Australia, with Tasmania forming the southern limit in the east.
