His courtesy name was Yizhi. A native of the State of Lu (with its capital in Qufu, Shandong, and his birthplace in Tengzhou, Shandong—though some sources cite Qufu as his birthplace) during the transition from the Spring and Autumn period to the Warring States period, he was an ancient Chinese architect and engineer revered by construction craftsmen as their patron saint. Lu Ban was born into a family of carpenters. At the age of twelve, he became an apprentice to a master carpenter living in seclusion in the Zhongnan Mountains, where he learned the craft of woodworking. In his early years, he held an official post in the State of Lu overseeing construction projects before traveling to the State of Chu. Around 450 BC, when the State of Chu was preparing to attack the State of Song, Lu Ban was commissioned to construct siege ladders (*yunti*). Upon hearing this, Mozi appealed to the King of Chu on moral grounds, pointing out that an attack on Song would result in heavy civilian casualties and urging him against such an unjust act; Mozi ultimately succeeded in averting the war. Mozi's philosophy regarding the creation of practical tools for production also influenced Lu Ban, who subsequently invented and created various tools and devices, including the carpenter's square, the ink marker (*modou*), the plane, the chisel, the saw, the stone mill, the roof-end tile (*wadang*), and the hook-and-ruler (*gouju*). During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Confucian scholar Zhao Qi annotated the name "Gongshu Ban" as "Lu Ban," marking the formal emergence of the name "Lu Ban," which came to represent the highest praise for a master craftsman. Through the spread of folklore, Lu Ban's image was gradually mythologized. By the Ming Dynasty, he had been elevated to the status of an immortal and incorporated into the pantheon of folk deities. Lu Ban represents the pinnacle of ancient Chinese technological and cultural achievement; through his numerous inventions and creations, he profoundly influenced and transformed people's methods of production and daily life, making outstanding contributions to the history of Chinese science and technology. The core of his spirit lies in proactive enterprise and independent innovation; he stands as both a paragon of the Chinese nation's diligence and wisdom and a symbol of the spirit of technological innovation, exerting a profound influence on the spiritual character of the Chinese people.
