"The idea of writing a history of the interior British Columbia forest industry first arose a few years ago when I began a book on coastal logging history. At that time I had considered, briefly attempting a book that would document the evolution of the industry throughout the entire province. It quickly became clear this was probably an impossible task. The subject was simply too big for one book, and the coastal and interior industries are too different to include under one cover. The interior of BC is an extremely diverse place. It consists of several distinct regions, each with its own pattern of development period. Until relatively recent times, these regions were isolated from each other and consequently developed their own characters. Forest workers in some regions hardly know of the existence of other regions, let alone how logging and saw milling have evolved there. The differences between climate and terrain in the Okanagan and the Bulkey Valley, for instance are greater than those between most nations, and the industrial development of Prince George and Cranbrook followed completely different paths, decades apart. Compared to the coast, the interior industry has been dominated less by large, integrated corporations than by local entrepreneurs and family owned companies. Until recently, there have been few interior companies that operate in more than one part of the province, so a diverse cast of characters appears in this account. Thousands of people and hundreds of companies have played significant roles in the evolution of the industry. For every name mentioned in this book there are scores probably hundreds more whose contributions go unrecorded." [From the introduction] " Ken Drushka worked as a journalist before spending 16 years in the forest industry as a logger, silvicultural contractor, and the operator of a custom sawmill. His work has been published in numerous papers and magazines, Drushka is also the author of the best selling Working in the Woods, Tracks in the Forest, Three Men and a Forester, and HR a Biography of HR Mcmillan, which won the 1996 Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Book Prize for best book published about British Columbia." [from the dust jacket] This is a history of logging in the interior of British Columbia by one who actually worked there and is an expert in the field.

But he was also very reserved, private and complicated. Drushka's portrait of him, compiled over years of reading through the public record and working closely with MacMillan's family and business associates, is a respectful but clear-eyed look at the real H.R.: the ardent conservationist who was also a ruthless business tycoon; the shy, retiring gentleman who was also described as an "elemental force of nature:' the strait-laced businessman who had a lifelong friendship with his eccentric cousin Mazo de la Roche; the devoted family man who maintained a decades-long intimate friendship with his secretary." - from strikingly illustrated dust jacket.
