In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [modest wear and slight bumping to extremities, light spotting/foxing to edges of text block]. (4 illustrated plates) Humorous novel set in small-town Indiana (is there such a word as Indianaiana?). The title character is described in a contemporary review as "a big,… lanky, raw boned countryman, a natural born 'hoss trader,' illiterate and in a way uncouth, but.also an astute and adroit politician, loving the game for its own sake and not at all scrupulous as to his methods." The author was a native and resident of Centralia, Illinois, where he was the longtime editor of the local newspaper; so why, I wonder, did he decide to set his novel in Indiana. Illustrated by H.S. DeLay (illustrator).

With biographical notices of eminent divines. -- Plates (* toned): Luther. Cecil Calvert*, Luther preaching*, Philadelphia churches (First Baptist*, Seventh Presbyterian*), Swedenb…org's house*, William Penn*, Abraham offering Isaac, Christ reasoning with the doctors, William White*, Moses Maimonides, Mahomet teaching* -- `Notwithstanding the general abhorrence and contempt with which the Mormons are regarded by all other religious sects, they adhere pertinaciously to their claim to be the true church. But the most remarkable feature of the Mormon creed is their "spiritual wife" doctrine. This theory is based on the idea that the future kingdom of the saints is to consist solely of their own posterity, and hence the more children a "saint" has, the more hears of glory are created; and that women may become heirs of heaven also, by becoming "sealed" to a saint, and entering paradise with him.' (p. 98-104) -- `What, then, are Mr. [Charles] Wadsworth's defects? We answer, a monotonous and tiresome tone of voice; a mumbling of his words, by which he fails to expel their articulation beyond his teeth-- a peculiarity which frequently deprives his original and expressive nomenclature of half its effect. The affluence of his ideas leads him to despise all the established rules. But he seizes three or four of the chief thoughts contained in, or suggested by, the text, and expounds and illlus- trates them after his own fashion, in utter indifference to all that Porter or Gresley may have enjoined in their manuals on Homiletics.' (p. 336 f.) VG orig. embossed brown cloth. Several plates toned, text vg.
