In den Warenkorb2pp., landscape 12mo. Addressed to 'Dear Furniss'. He is glad to hear of Furniss's success: 'Your tour ends after the last dinner but one of the year. No dinner Xmas week! awful that isn't it? When all are feasting no dinner for the Punch boys!!' He hopes Furniss will be 'here with us'. Had Furniss been 'on the spot' Burnand would have got him 'to substitute something for your John Bull picture in almanack which no one (I do not speak of "The Table" but of our best friends outside) comprehends. However thats done & can't be undone; but its as well to bear it in mind so as to know the style of thing to avoid when Xmas comes again'. He reminds Furniss that Christmas is 'a time of "peace & goodwill"', and urges him to 'let byegones be byegones (whether spelt thus or "bygones" - which I don't know) bury the hatchet as the Tomahawk was long ago buried'. The 'Tomahawk' was a a satirical London magazine of the 1870s, and the reference may be to a feud between Furniss and its editor Arthur William a'Beckett (1844-1909), who was to fall on hard times towards the end of his life.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. AN UNRECORDED 1730 ISSUE OF TOM THUMB, CONTAINED IN A SIGNIFICANT COLLECTION OF AUGUSTAN SATIRE 8vo, 203 x 125mm; 6 works bound in a single volume; various paginations. A wonderfully rich sammelband, which begins with James Bramston's Horatian 'Art of Politicks', runs through first or early editions of 'Flora', 'Hurlothrumbo', 'The Beggar's Opera' and its sequel 'Polly', and concludes with an unrecorded early issue of 'Tom Thumb'. Bibliographic note: We term the present unrecorded issue 'First edition, third issue'. The sequence is as follows. Henry Fielding's classic 'Tom Thumb' was first published in April (24th or 25th) 1730 by the London stationer J. Roberts. The first edition was described by Fielding's bibliographer Wilbur Lucius Cross in only one issue (Cross, III, p. 291), though in fact five are now known (inclusive of the present example). All are exceptionally scarce, with the most recent first edition selling in 2015 at Christie's for $18,750. The work was clearly in demand, and the text was swiftly revised; a new slightly longer version was performed on 7 May 1730, and a stated "Second Edition" was published shortly thereafter. The variants of the first edition, meanwhile, are mainly distinguished by differences in the title-page. The issue contained in the present sammelband is a novelty: it bears the title-page of Huntingdon 123351, which is a first edition; what follows is the text of the stated "Second Edition" (as identified by additional scenes in Act 2). This reveals, for the first time, that the revised text was in fact prepared while the first edition was still being sold. The first edition issues can therefore be classified as follows: the two states without a price on the title-page can be called 'first issue', the two that bear the price "6 Pence" or "6d" on the title-page (both known in single copies at the Huntingdon) can be called 'second issue', and the present version, with "6 Pence", no edition statement but the extended text, can be called 'third issue'. Evidently it is of the utmost rarity, and is also the most illuminating of all early issues in bibliographic terms, as it clearly marks a transition between the set of first issues and the stated second edition. While 'The Art of Politicks' is relatively common, and Flora is a third edition, both 'The Beggar's Opera' and (especially) its sequel 'Polly' are scarce first editions. (Note that both lack the printed music that is sometimes included - though often absent.) The volume contains many of the high-points of Augustan satire. The wonderfully titled Hurlothrumbo, for example, is the work of Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson, a dancing-master from Cheshire, who played the lead role - replete with stilts and a fiddle. In his 'Life of Henry Fielding', Frederick Lawrence writes of Hurlothrumbo that "A more curious or a more insane production has seldom issued from human pen." Gay's 'Beggar's Opera', meanwhile, is perhaps the most famous of all Augustan satires, and is still performed. The sequel, 'Polly', was considered too blatant a satire to be performed and was banned until its debut in 1777. The volume retains its original board but has been attractively and very skilfully rebacked, probably in the late nineteenth century. It bears the armorial bookplate of William Henry Mason of Morton Hall, near Retford (who in 1918 became High Sherrif of Nottinghamshire). The corners are bumped, but the contents are generally in very good condition, noting only some browning and very occasional annotations and markings.…

In den Warenkorb3pp, 4to, each page on a separate leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded once. There is no indication that either item was published, nor even that the poem is connected to the 'programme'. (If unpublished the poem may have found its way into Fry's papers from Hassall's.) The 'programme' - with no title or heading - is two pages long (with slight damage from a small staple to corners of both leaves) and complete, being divided into six numbered sections. Section 1, as first typed, begins: After the first two pieces on the programme, we are taking the poems more or less chronologically, so that we can follow the way that Christopher Hassall went, in the search which every poet must take, for the voice which would say, what he wanted to say.' Fry has cut this in autograph to: 'After the first two pieces on the programme, the poems follow more or less chronologically.' He praises the 'furious innocence of concentration' of Hassall's early poem 'The Arrow', 'like a child staring: and with it, never very far away, the ironic comment of humour.' He describes how Hassall's takes time 'to master his individual voice, but when it came it was unmistakable'. Recurring themes in Hassall's work are his Christian faith and love of music. He quotes 'some lines in a poem remembering his boyhood days at a choir school in Tenbury Wells'. He turns to Hassall's love of the theatre, his career as an actor on leaving Oxford, and writing of 'popular lyrics for Ivor Novello's musicals at Drury Lane'. At this point he adds in autograph: 'And later, the libretti for operas: the first of all was perhaps the Troilus and Cressida for William Walton.' At the end of the first section Fry announces two readings from Hassall, showing his 'great flair for writing pieces for special occasions'. In the second section he discusses Hassall's 1939 Canterbury Festival play 'Christ's Comet', 'which was performed in the Cathedral chapter-house'. Part 3 announces the beginning of 'this second part of the programme', with Fry adding an autograph note about 'a cyle of 7 lyrics': 'They are all about ways of getting about, and with them we are in the atmosphere of the delightful poems for children which were to come later.' The fourth section points out 'a change in manner in some of the poems we are going to read now from the Red Leaf - a change partly brought about perhaps by Hassall's admiration for the poetry of D. H. Lawrence'. The fifth section names humorous and children's poems to be recited. The last section announces the eight sonnets from his posthumous collection 'Bell Harry' which end of the programme, with Fry explaining the Canterbury context, with reference to the 'old Manor House near Canterbury' in which Hassall ended his days. Accompanying the 'programme', on a leaf of thicker paper, is the typescript of an unattributed poem titled 'Pilgrim's Way' ('Pilgrims to the golden shrine | Under Canterbury towers, | Blessed by your wayfaring | Through the early English flowers.'), divided into two eight-line stanzas, each with the refrain: 'Every day a Holy day, | Riding over Pilgrim's Way.' The poem is presumably by Hassall, from the window of whose manor house could be seen the celebrated road to Canterbury. A pencil note at the head of the page states that the three leaves were found in Hassall's collection 'The Red Leaf'.…
