First published in 1886 The Cosmopolitan was a family magazine run by Paul Schlicht in New York; this issue was edited by John Brisben Walker (1847-1931) who bought the magazine in 1889 and transformed it into a literary magazine; in 1905 it was bought by William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) and is now a popular women's monthly fashion, lifestyle and entertainment magazine Cosmopolitan (also known as Cosmo) under Hearst Communications. Written by Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), The Jungle Book was first published in magazines as a series of stories from 1893, inspired by the author's childhood in India.
