In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. 8vo. x, 552, [12] pp. With the 5 folding maps. In the publisher's navy ribbed cloth, gilt-stamped to spine. The volume has been fully conserved including re-backing with spine strip laid down. Having served as a volunteer doctor in the Langman Field Hospital in Bloemfontein in early 1900, Conan Doyle wrote a pamphlet titled The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct, and also this present volume (dedicated to Langman). He is quoted as believing that this resulted in his knighthood awarded in 1902. It is also significant in being his first work of non-fiction, a branch of his writing that came to be dominated by his later interest in spiritualism. Boards with a little water-marking at tail and half-title with a neat contemporary ownership signature, else unmarked. A very good copy.…

Original black diamond-grain cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Dark brown coated endpapers. Hinges a bit cracked yet firm. Otherwise a near fine copy. Chemised in a quarter olive green morocco slipcase. Rodney Stone is a novel that blends the mystery and coming-of-age novel with a boxing story. Doyle had originally envisioned this to be a play, but began writing the novel in the summer of 1895. It was first serialized in The Strand Magazine, January-December 1896, with illustrations by Sidney Paget. "The author's knowledge and experience of boxing went back to his youth." (Green and Gibson). According to Doyle, "'they say that every form of knowledge comes useful [sic] sooner or later. Certainly my own experience in boxing and my very large acquaintance with the history of the prize-ring found their scope when I wrote 'Rodney Stone.' No one but a fighting man would ever, I think, quite understand or appreciate some of the detail" (Memories and Adventures). Doyle felt that the book would bring a renewed interest in the sport. The Sign of the Four (also called The Sign of Four) is Doyle's second Sherlock Holmes story after A Study in Scarlet. The genre blending murder mystery-adventure-romance follows Holmes and Watson as they search for Miss Mary Morstan's missing father and lost treasure. First published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine (1890), the novel was soon released in book form. Initially receiving only moderate success, after the publication of the stories in Adventures (1892) and Memoirs (1894) its popularity soared. Green and Gibson A7a.i. Near Fine.…

Small octavo (7 3/8 x 4 13/16 inches; 187 x 122 mm.). [8], 403, [1, printer's imprint], [4, publisher's advertisements] pp. Sixteen plates (including frontispiece). Doyle was commissioned by an American magazine to return to the beloved Holmes and Watson for a series of new stories. Of the project he said " 'I would not write a Holmes story without a worthy plot, without a problem which interested my own mind, for that is a requisite before you can interest any one else.' The main problem was the plot. The plots did come and thirteen stories were written, among them some of the most interesting in the whole series" (Green and Gibson). The stories include: "The Adventure of the Empty House," "The Adventure of the Norwood Builder," "The Adventure of the Dancing Men," "The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist," "The Adventure of the Priory School," "The Adventure of Black Peter," "The Adventure of Charles August Milverton," "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons," "The Adventure of the Three Students," "The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez," "The Adventure of the Missing Three-Quarter," "The Adventure of the Abbey Grange," and "The Adventure of the Second Stain."
