Dustjacket. 412pp. A very handsome copy in clean. bright cloth, in a gold dustjacket with some light wear to extremities, rubbing at the spine ends, and a single, straight scratch running down the front panel. A very good copy. Downie, originally born in Scotland, was a prominent figure of the mid-19th century gold rushes in California and British Columbia, pioneering several new routes to the goldfields on the Fraser River, and claiming to be one of the first men to find gold in 1849 in Sierra County, CA, before the settlement there was re-christened Downieville. The true first, ghost written with Downie's input by Waage, was published in 1893.
