Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by The Strong Oak Press with Tom Donovan Publishing, Stevenage, Herts, UK. 1988. 241 pgs. DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. This is the record of the service of Charles Douie during the Great War. It was originally written as a series of articles for The Nineteenth Century and After in 1928; he later added more material for its publication as a book. His memoir is along the lines of Edmund Blunden's Undertones of War, possessing high literary merit, Douie was a well educated soldier. Douie enlisted in 1914 at eighteen years of age with a desire to become a Corporal, however his family obtained him a commission; eventually he became a subaltern in the 1st Dorset Regiment of the British Army. He opens his book with an examination of the soldier of WW1, his reasons for fighting and the existence he experienced at the front. He recounts his enthusiasm for war and wanting to get to the front before it ended; pursuing this goal against the objection of his family. His battalion participated in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 of which he was apart, fighting in the La Boisselle sector and later Thiepval which decimated his battalion. He ended the war in Italy though he has little to say about this campaign, ending his story with impressions of the Armistice on him and his fellow soldiers. Overall this is an exceptional account and has been largely overlooked except by WW1 enthusiasts who consider it a classic. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, uncommon in the jacket. "If one were asked to name the book which voiced most expressively and with the greatest literary art the sentiments of the best type of junior British officer in the War, one would find it hard to select a better than this" (Falls); Lengel calls it "one of the best British memoirs". Douie served in France and Flanders with the 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment, and in Italy with the 1st Garrison Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. "An insightful meditation on how soldiers experienced and remembered the war, and a critique of the disillusionment school of war writing. Douie does not provide a narrative of his day-to-day life at the front, which he considers too tedious to chronicle in detail, but illustrates his memoir with scenes from the Somme and Flanders, where he spent several weeks stationed on the Belgian coast" (Lengel). Falls p.193, awarding two stars (of a maximum three) for "a very good book"; Lengel 511. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed textured paper boards, paper label to spine and front cover. With dust jacket illustrated with Orpen's "Thinker on the Butte de Warlencourt". Scattered foxing to edges of text block and internally; jacket spine sunned and with a few nicks, chips, and short closed tears. A very good copy.
