Lejos de esgrimir fórmulas planfletarias en el estilo de las demandas afines de los grupos contraculturales, el autor presenta una disquisición filosófica formal, apoyada por un conocimiento profundo de los aspectos involucrados en el tema, desde la acción de los agentes activos de ciertas sustancias en el organismo humano hasta las implicaciones sociales que derivarían con su uso reglamentado. Esta argumentación busca del lector no tanto su crédito en un consenso, sino que sea apto en convenir con las conclusiones de una dialéctica que allana los obstáculos ofrecidos hasta ahora como presuntos fundamentos de la necesidad de prohibir y penalizar lo que el derecho moral del individuo le otorga por la naturaleza misma de las leyes civiles. Frente a las demandas de los grupos que reivindican sus derechos en contra de la inercia y los intereses institucionales, como aquellas que pugnan por el derecho al aborto, los derechos humanos, la eutanasia y el respeto por la sexualidad no heterosexual, asoma una renovada presión: legitimar el derecho a consumir cierto tipo de drogas, sin las restricciones impuestos hasta ahora por un código que confunde la criminalidad con la búsqueda del placer o, como apunta el autor, con una recreación para adultos.
