Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Scholar's name to ffep (A. R. Littlewood). Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ.; The poetry of the archaic period that the Greeks called iambic is characterized by scornful criticism of friend and foe and by sexual license. The purpose of these poems is unclear, but they seem to have some connection with cult songs used in religious festivals--for example, those honoring Dionysus and Demeter. In this completely new Loeb Classical Library edition of early Greek iambic poetry, Douglas Gerber provides a faithful and fully annotated translation of the fragments that have come down to us. Archilochus expressed himself in colorful and vigorous language. Famous throughout antiquity for his winged barbs, he is often considered the archetypal poet of blame. Other major poets in this volume are Semonides, best known for a long misogynistic poem describing ten types of wives; and Hipponax, who was much admired by the poets of Hellenistic Alexandria, in part for his depictions of the licentious and seamy side of society.; Loeb Classical Library No. 259; 560 pages.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Scholar's name to ffep (A. R. Littlewood). Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ.; The Greek poetry of the archaic period that we call elegy was composed primarily for banquets and convivial gatherings. Its subject matter consists of almost any topic, excluding only the scurrilous and obscene. In this completely new Loeb Classical Library edition, Douglas Gerber provides a faithful translation of the fragments and significant testimonia that have come down to us, with full explanatory notes. Most substantial in this volume is the collection of elegiac verses to which Theognis' name is attached. Drinking and merry-making are frequent themes in these poems; there are also more reflective and philosophic pieces and love poems. Together they offer an interesting picture of an aristocratic man's views about life, friendship, fate, and daily concerns. Also notable in this volume is the martial verse of the Spartan Tyrtaeus and the poetry of Solon, Athens' famous lawmaker.; Loeb Classical Library No. 258; 512 pages.

Bound in green cloth over boards, with gilt lettering to spine. From the personal library of the noted English historian of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, Professor Peter Morris Green, now of Iowa City, Iowa, 99 years old, nearly blind, but still working, in this case on a new translation and with annotations, of Herodotus, his favorite historian. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. His difficult poetry was revivified in the late 19th century and has increased in prominence since then. Laid in is a two-page typescript bibliography of the works of Pindar from another scholar. xvi, 160 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Sehr gut. pp. 19-24. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: [.] West's resuscitation of the old emendation ádinís for álinís proposed by Winterton has been rightly rejected by Lloyd-Jones and Verdenius. ádinís, "unskilful," fits poorly with the following verse and with the evidence of Hesychius galiósis' ákolastaínoúsis and Aelian (N A 15.11) who claims that í chersaía galí was once a human being who deinos akólastos ín kaí áfrodítin paránomon èvòsei. Semonides might have said that a woman unskilled in sexual matters is displeasing, but he would hardly say that she is nauseating. Even if álinís, which appears elsewhere only in Hesychius who glosses it with mainómenos, is corrupt, the context seems to demand some word with essentially the meaning Hesychius gives to his gloss. The Jack of context, the brevity of the fragment and the difficulty of finding parallel pass ages have contributed to this variety. Reprint. Zustand: Gut. pp. 7-14. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Interpretation of the fragment is complicated by the fact that Athenaeus has clearly not quoted all of the first sentence. Someone, in all probability a woman in view of poneomene, has done something which is being compared to the drinking habits of the Thracians or Phrygians. That this something is obscene has been generally acknowledged by critics of the passage and is supported by the last phrase. Let us, therefore, examine first the meaning of kýbda and poneoméne.
