Semonides might have said that a woman unskilled in sexual matters is displeasing, but he would hardly say that she is nauseating. Even if álinís, which appears elsewhere only in Hesychius who glosses it with mainómenos, is corrupt, the context seems to demand some word with essentially the meaning Hesychius gives to his gloss. The Jack of context, the brevity of the fragment and the difficulty of finding parallel pass ages have contributed to this variety. Nevertheless, in spite of the impossibility of proving any one interpretation on the basis of the available evidence, it may be useful if the arguments which have uses lambáno and aireo. Someone, in all probability a woman in view of poneomene, has done something which is being compared to the drinking habits of the Thracians or Phrygians. That this something is obscene has been generally acknowledged by critics of the passage and is supported by the last phrase. Let us, therefore, examine first the meaning of kýbda and poneoméne.
