Soft cover. Zustand: New. The Parsees: Their History, Manners, Customs, and Religion by DosabhoyFramjee is a pioneering work that offers a comprehensive and respectful account of the Parsi community in India. Written by a member of the community in the 19th century, the book provides a detailed overview of the Parsis' Zoroastrian heritage, tracing their migration from Persia to India following Islamic conquests. Framjee explores their religious beliefs, ethical code, social customs, festivals, and daily life, presenting the Parsis as a progressive, industrious, and culturally rich group. Importantly, the book counters colonial and orientalist narratives by offering an insider's voice, defending the community's values while calling for internal reform and adaptation to modernity. Framjee also addresses contemporary issues such as education, women's status, and religious tolerance. As both a historical document and a cultural defense, the work remains an essential source for understanding the identity and evolution of the Parsi community in colonial India.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-Through this discourse, the author has made a noble attempt to make the reader acquainted with the history, beliefs, customs and manners of the Parsees, who with their commercial enterprise, formed important ties between the British and the Indians. Throughout the work the author asserts that the customs and rites of the Parsees as distinct, and that do not borrow from neither the Hindus nor the Muslims, and how their practices distinguish them from other oriental practices. Throughout the rebellion in the East the Parsees have maintained an unshaken loyalty to the British, whom they are proud to call their fellow - subjects, and while preserving their own independence of religion and customs, their chief desire is that the British rule in India should be consolidated upon a basis of strict justice and mutual interest. The Parsees are endeavouring to follow the example which the British have set them. Western civilization has had great influence on their characters, and they are now eagerly embracing the opportunities for improvement and advancement that are offered to them. The writer is conscious, however, that he has most rigidly adhered to truth, and should he has succeeded in rendering his narrative clear and intelligible, the object with which he set out will have been fully accomplished. The book was written in 1858. About the Author:-Dosabhai Framji Karaka (1829 1902) was an Indian newspaper editor and official, known for his history of the Parsees. He was educated at the Elphinstone Institution. After editing a Gujarati paper, he became manager of the Bombay Times. He spent 185859 in England, where he wrote The Parsees: their history, manners, customs, and religion. Returning to India, he held a number of legal and official positions.
