Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the leader of the Doolittle Raid, Jimmy Doolittle, for which he received the Medal of Honor. Inscription reads: "To Donna Grimm: With kindest personal regards, and every good wish to you and your family. J.H. Doolittle." Gen. James H. Doolittle (1896-1993) was the recipient of the Medal of Honor for his raid on mainland Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Known as the Doolittle Raid, the long-range bombing raid utilized 16 B-25B Mitchell medium bombers, with the plan to land in unoccupied China. The bombing raid was successful and a major morale booster for the United States, four months after the surprise attack on Hawaii. Signed.

Jimmy Doolittle and Gen. Carl Spaatz, along with three other dignitaries. The Air Force Day Banquet, held on August 1, 1947, took place at the Statler Hotel in Washington, D.C. This event marked the first national observance of "Air Force Day," designated by President Truman six weeks earlier to honor the Army Air Forces on its 40th anniversary. The event was hosted shortly before the National Security Act of 1947, which created a separate military branch for the United States Air Force. Gen. Doolittle served as the master of ceremonies, and the featured speaker was General of the Army Air Forces, Carl Spaatz. Signed.
