In den WarenkorbMagazine. Zustand: Fair. Special Issue on The Presidents. Unpaginated (78 pages plus covers). Cover illustration is Theodore Roosevelt. Cover has some wear and soiling. This Special Issue was published in connection with the Bicentennial of the United States/Declaration of Independence. Format is two pages per President, with one being an image and the other page text. Underlining on section on Recent Presidential Elections. The President of the United States (informally referred to as "POTUS") is the head of state and head of government of the United States. The president directs the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces. The president is considered to be one of the world's most powerful political figures, as the leader of the only contemporary global superpower. The role includes being the commander-in-chief of the world's most expensive military with the second largest nuclear arsenal and leading the nation with the largest economy by nominal GDP. The office of President holds significant hard and soft power both domestically and abroad. Article II of the U.S. Constitution vests the executive power of the United States in the president. The power includes execution of federal law, alongside the responsibility of appointing federal executive, diplomatic, regulatory and judicial officers, and concluding treaties with foreign powers with the advice and consent of the Senate. The president is further empowered to grant federal pardons and reprieves, and to convene and adjourn either or both houses of Congress under extraordinary circumstances. The president is largely responsible for dictating the legislative agenda of the party to which the president is a member. The president also directs the foreign and domestic policy of the United States. Since the office of President was established in 1789, its power has grown substantially, as has the power of the federal government as a whole. The president is indirectly elected by the people through the Electoral College to a four-year term, and is one of only two nationally elected federal officers, the other being the Vice President of the United States. However, nine vice presidents have assumed the presidency without having been elected to the office, by virtue of a president's intra-term death or resignation. The Twenty-second Amendment (adopted in 1951) prohibits anyone from being elected president for a third term. It also prohibits a person from being elected to the presidency more than once if that person previously had served as president, or acting president, for more than two years of another person's term as president. In all, 44 individuals have served 45 presidencies (counting Grover Cleveland's two non-consecutive terms separately) spanning 57 full four-year terms.…

At about page 20 the articles shifted to coverage of the Presidential campaign. Time (stylized in all caps) is an American news magazine published and based in New York City. For nearly a century, it was published weekly. Time has been based in New York City since its first issue published on March 3, 1923, by Briton Hadden and Henry Luce. It was the first weekly news magazine in the United States. The two had previously worked together as chairman and managing editor, respectively, of the Yale Daily News. They first called the proposed magazine Facts, wanting to emphasize brevity so a busy man could read it in an hour. They changed the name to Time and used the slogan "Take Time - It's Brief". Hadden was considered carefree and liked to tease Luce. He saw Time as important but also fun, which accounted for its heavy coverage of celebrities and politicians, the entertainment industry and pop culture, criticizing it as too light for serious news. Time set out to tell the news through people, and until the late 1960s, the magazine's cover depicted a single person. The first issue of Time featured Joseph G. Cannon, the retired Speaker of the House of Representatives, on its cover. On Hadden's death in 1929, Luce became the dominant man at Time and a major figure in the history of 20th century media. After Time magazine began publishing its weekly issues in March 1923, Roy Larsen was able to increase its circulation by using U.S. radio and movie theaters around the world. It often promoted both Time magazine and U.S. political and corporate interests. According to The March of Time, as early as 1924, Larsen had brought Time into the infant radio business with the broadcast of a 15-minute sustaining quiz show entitled Pop Question which survived until 1925". Then in 1928, Larsen "undertook the weekly broadcast of a 10-minute program series of brief news summaries, drawn from current issues of Time magazine . which was originally broadcast over 33 stations throughout the United States". Larsen next arranged for the 30-minute radio program The March of Time to be broadcast over CBS beginning on March 6, 1931. Each week, the program presented a dramatization of the week's news for its listeners; thus Time magazine itself was brought "to the attention of millions previously unaware of its existence", leading to an increased circulation of the magazine during the 1930s. Between 1931 and 1937, Larsen's The March of Time radio program was broadcast over CBS radio, and between 1937 and 1945, it was broadcast over NBC radio - except between 1939 and 1941, when it was not aired. People magazine was based on Time's "People" page. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.…

Cover is an image of General Creighton Abrams with the banner New Man in Viet Nam. Time (stylized in all caps as TIME) is an American news magazine based in New York City. It was the first weekly news magazine in the United States. It was published weekly for nearly a century. Starting in March 2020, it transitioned to every other week. It was first published in New York City on March 3, 1923, and for many years it was run by its influential co-founder, Henry Luce. Time set out to tell the news through people, and until the late 1960s, the magazine's cover depicted a single person. Creighton Williams Abrams Jr. (September 15, 1914 - September 4, 1974) was a United States Army general who commanded military operations in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. He was then Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1972 until his death in 1974. Abrams graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the Class of 1936 His classmates included Benjamin O. Davis Jr. and William Westmoreland. Abrams became an armor officer early in the development of that branch and served as a tank company commander in the 1st Armored Division in 1940. During World War II, Abrams served in the 4th Armored Division, initially as regimental adjutant (June 1941 - June 1942), battalion commander (July 1942 - March 1943), and regiment executive officer (March-September 1943) with the 37th Armor Regiment. In September 1943, a reorganization of the division redesignated the 37th Armor Regiment to the 37th Tank Battalion, which Abrams commanded. He commanded Combat Command B of the division during the Battle of the Bulge. During this time Abrams was promoted to the temporary ranks of major (February 1942), lieutenant colonel (September 1942), and colonel (April 1945). Abrams was promoted to lieutenant colonel at age 27 years, 11 months. During much of this time, the 4th Armored Division, led by the 37th Tank Battalion, was the spearhead for General George S. Patton's Third Army. Abrams was well known as an aggressive armor commander. By using his qualities as a leader and by consistently exploiting the relatively small advantages of speed and reliability of his vehicles, he managed to defeat German forces that had the advantage of superior armor and superior guns. He was twice decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism, on September 20 and December 26, 1944. General George Patton said of him: "I'm supposed to be the best tank commander in the Army, but I have one peerâ"Abe Abrams. He's the world champion." Frequently the spearhead of the Third Army during World War II, Abrams was one of the leaders in the relief effort that broke up the German entrenchments surrounding Bastogne and the 101st Airborne Division during the Battle of the Bulge. Following the war, Abrams served on the Army General Staff (1945-1946), as head of the department of tactics at the Armored School, Fort Knox (1946-1948), and graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth (1949). Abrams commanded the 63rd Tank Battalion, part of the 1st Infantry Division, in Europe (1949-1951). He was again promoted to colonel and commanded the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (1951-1952). These units were important assignments due to the Cold War concern for potential invasion of western Europe by the Soviet Union. He then attended and graduated from the Army War College in 1953. He was transferred to the Pentagon as deputy Chief of Staff for Operations (1962-1963) and during this time he served as representative of the Army Chief of Staff overseeing the armed forces deployed to support the enrollment of James Meredith at the segregated University of Mississippi. He was promoted to lieutenant general and commanded V Corps in Europe (1963-1964). Abrams was promoted to general in 1964 and appointed Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army. He was seriously considered as a candidate for chief of staff. Due to concerns about the conduct of the Vietnam War, he was appointed as deputy to his West Point classmate, General William Westmoreland, commander of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), in May 1967. Abrams succeeded Westmoreland as COMUSMACV on June 10, 1968. His tenure of command was not marked by the public optimism of his predecessors, who were prone to press conferences and public statements. From 1969, the Vietnam War increasingly became a conventional war between the military forces of South Vietnam and North Vietnam. Following the election of President Richard Nixon, Abrams began implementing the Nixon Administration's Vietnamization policy to decrease U.S. involvement in Vietnam. With this new goal, Abrams decreased American troop strength from a peak of 543,000 in early 1969 to 49,000 in June 1972. Presumed First Edition, First printing this issue.…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. Signed by Senator Ted Kennedy on the front. The signature with sentiment reads With best Wishes Ted Kennedy. The mailing label on the front lists the recipient as Burton H. Silberman. Burton H. Silberman had a passion for history, particularly World War II, which was reflected in his extensive collection of WWII posters, donated to the WWII Museum in New Orleans. He also collected signed Time magazine covers starting in 1963, showing his keen interest in historical and cultural milestones. American lawyer and politician Ted Kennedy served as a United States senator from Massachusetts for almost 47 years, from 1962 until his death in 2009. A member of the Democratic Party and the prominent political Kennedy family, he was the second most senior member of the Senate when he died. He is ranked fifth in United States history for length of continuous service as a senator. Kennedy was the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy and U.S. attorney general and U.S. senator Robert F. Kennedy. In this issue of TIME magazine (text not present) there was an article on The Ascent of Ted Kennedy which included: At 36, Edward M. Kennedy became the youngest majority whip in the history of the U.S. Senate. By moving from a backbench to the cockpit of congressional power, the senior Senator from Massachusetts could now overtly exercise the influence that has hitherto been his primarily by virtue of legend, tragedy and guilt. He disavowed his election as a personal victory or as a steppingstone toward the presidency. "I view it," he said, "as expressing the sense of the Democratic Senators in favor of an aggressive and creative program in the upcoming Congress." The loser was more candidand more accurateabout the situation."I don't think I could have been defeated by anyone else in the U.S. Senate," said Louisiana's Russell Long. "And my guess is that I would have taken any other opponent by about a 2-to-1 margin." That point scored, he continued with a less gracious observation: "This happens to have been a race where it was a nationwide proposition, and while I had Senator Kennedy outgunned in the United States Senate, he had me outgunned in the United States." Ted Kennedy has made large promises that go beyond the technical confines of his new post. He has pledged to promote an independent Democratic program. He vows that the Senate "must be made responsive to the demand of the people for institutions that are more relevant." How close he comes to fulfilling these self-imposed demands will be an absorbing subject not only for his fellow legislators and the new President, but above all for millions of Americans who are fascinated by the indomitable Kennedy legend and its latest inheritor. Single sheet, printed on both sides Presumed First Edition, First printing this issue.…
