I am very pleased to be able to offer a very large vintage leather-bound book titled: A New Greek and English Lexicon, Principally on the Plan of the Greek and German Lexicons of Sc…hneider, by James Donnegan, M.D. This rather large leather-bound hard cover book (6 x 9 ¼ x 3 ¼ inches, 1413 pages) was published by Hilliard, Gray & Co. of Boston, dated 1833 and the First American Edition, from the Second London Edition. According to the title page, it was revised and enlarged by R. B. Patton. The sub-titles reads: The words alphabetically arranged distinguishing such as are poetical, of dialectic variety, or peculiar to certain writers and classes of writers, with examples, literally translated, selected from the classical writers. There are three Prefaces, an explanation of abbreviations and marks, and then the body of the book begins (please see the photos). The book is bound in full calf leather with a black leather title panel with gilt letters on the spine. Condition: All things considered, this book is in very good condition. The calf covers are rubbed and worn, it would appear intentionally on the front cover with some markings that resemble scribbling by a child. There is some loss of leather to the bottom of the spine on both sides, but the binding still feels tight and sound. Inside, a former owner s inked name, blotted no less, still shows big and there is a small rectangle cut out of the front endpaper where doubtless another owner s name appeared. There is some light foxing and soiling in the early pages of the book but this does not get into the main body of the text, and almost none at the rear of the book. There is a page or two missing up front but it was probably blank and soiled or marked. At the rear there is some sign of a small water stain to the bottom of some of the late pages but not very deep into the book. The hinges are still intact, and the binding is tight and sound despite the thickness of the book. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
